Though the names Vang Viang and Vientiane might sound alike, they are not alike. Vang Vieng was a small tourist town in the middle of the country side, Vientiane was the big capital city of Laos, much nicer than Vang Viang. There were great restaurants with different types of cuisines and many things to do.

Même si le noms Vang Vieng et Vientiane se ressemblent beaucoup les 2 villes n’ont rien en commun. Van Vieng est une petite ville provinciale et Vientiane LA grande ville du Laos. Il y a plein de bons restaurants beaucoup de style bistrot et beaucoup de choses à faire.

As a challenge, my parents decided to let my brother and I organize a day of visiting. We had a budget and everything. I originally wanted us to bike to the place to visit but we instead took a tuk-tuk. We went to the most important national monument in all of Laos, Pha That Luang. It’s a giant stupa where one of the breast bones of Buddha is supposed lay. That and the temples around it were just ok. Next we went to the Arch De Triomphe of Laos. It was like a representation of the real thing in Paris. That too was pretty but also just meh. Then we had lunch at an Indian restaurant which was really good. I had never had Indian food before and it was a change from the regular Laotian food you find everywhere.

Mes parents avaient décidé de tester nos aptitudes pour voir si nous pouvions nous débrouiller dans une ville nouvelle inconnue. Ils nous ont donné un budget et il fallait que nous organisions la visite de la ville. Avec mon frère nous avons recherché ce qu’il fallait voir dans la ville puis tracé l’itinéraire sur le plan. J’avais pensé que nous louerions des vélos mais le lendemain en négociant bien le tuk tuk nous avons fait le tour des monuments. Nous avons commencé par la visite du temple de Pha That Luang, qui est l’édifice le plus connu du Laos. Il y a une stupa géante où sont des os du Buddha. Apres nous avons vu Patuxai, un peu l’arc de triomphe du Laos. C’était Ok mais pas exceptionnel. Puis nous avons mangé dans un resto indien (parfois c’est bien de faire un petit break de la cuisine locale) c’était très bon.

The most interesting and eye-opening place we went to was COPE. It was a visitor center about the Vietnam War and its effects on Laos. Laos did not take part in the Vietnam War it was NEUTRAL. But it ended up being the most heavily bombed country in the world per capita because of its proximity to Vietnam and Cambodia. The Americans needed to get rid of all of their bombs and grenades before landing back to base, so they would drop them on Laos. They killed many people. Over time, those sank just beneath the surface of the ground, so they were not visible. It affected the people working in the fields as they  were oblivious to this danger, and when they stepped over the bomb, it detonated resulting in them losing their leg or even their life. Efforts have been made to find and destroy these hidden bombs, but many still remain unseen and are a hazard to the Laotian people. There was a short film about a man who’s had gotten into one of those accidents and lost his vision and damaged limbs. It was frightening to hear that these terrible, terrible things are still happening today. But that wasn’t all what COPE was about, it also made prosthetic limbs for the people that lost theirs to bombs. They weren’t high tech robot things that make you look like you’re from the future and cost a million bucks, but they were sufficient enough. After leaving COPE, I was shocked that the U.S. could have done something like that and are not helping the Laos people enough to help the lean up that mess.

Mais je dirais que notre visite de centre COPE m’a vraiment ouvert les yeux et appris des choses. Le Laos s’est déclaré Neutre dans le conflit entre le Vietnam et les US, mais les Vietnamiens passaient par le Laos pour descendre leurs armes alors les US ont bombardé le Laos pendant toutes les années qu’a duré le conflit. Et de ce fait le Laos est la pays le plus bombardé au monde par habitants!!! On nous a montré un film où ils expliquaient que les avions américains ne rentraient pas à la base avec leurs bombes car c’était trop dangereux d’attérir  alors ils survolaient le Laos et lâcher leurs bombes. Beaucoup ont explosé en tuant des personnes innocentes mais pas toutes qui après ont été recouvertes. Encore maintenant il arrive que certaines sautent quand quelqu’un allume un feu ou travaille dans les champs. Il nous ont diffusé un film ou on suit une famille qui a été touché par une bombe, le mari a perdu la vue et ne peut plus travailler aux champs et produire un revenu pour sa famille. Donc il n pourra pas envoyer ses filles à l’école, c’est triste. COPE a plusieurs équipes qui passent dans les campagnes et aident au déminage. AU centre nous avons aussi vu les prothèses utilisées pour aider ceux qui ont perdu un membre.  Je ne savais pas q’un pays qui n’est pas en guerre peut être bombardé et quand c’est un pays pauvre personne ne l’aide et j’étais triste que c’était les US. Il faudrait qu’ils réparent leur erreurs.

Walking back to the hotel, we ran across this mall. It was modern and new and sleek. It had expensive shops in it like Gucci, and Rolex, and was so big and tall it could have been an airport terminal. But the best part was on the 3rd floor, the movie theatre. It was the nicest theatre I have ever been to, it made the one back in Massachusetts look like garbage. I wanted to see Mockingjay part 2 and we did so and payed less than back in MA. The screen was at least 100 feet across, and the sound definition was incredible. I had never seen anything like it. Plus we were like the only ones there since it was in English with Thai subtitles. I was more impressed with the room than the movie which was mediocre compared to the book. The directors missed so many important points urh. But never mind, the theatre was great but we had to leave to catch the night bus to Pakse. I love that word, (Pa)-(ksay) sounds so fun! We didn’t have to wait too long, only 20 minutes after the scheduled time (much better than the 1hr and 15min we had to wait in Vang Viang. That went all right, it was a very bumpy ride and I did not sleep well but I was to first who got to see the beautiful sunrise on Pakse.

Sur le chemin du retour, nous sommes passés devant un centre commercial et nous sommes rentrés pour voir, rien de trop exceptionnel mais ils avaient un cinéma. Il était tout neuf avec des super sièges, nous avons vu le dernier épisode des Hunger Games. Je n’ai pas trop aimé le film par rapport au livre j’ai trouvé qu’ils avaient oublié plein de détails important, mais j’étais bien dans le cinéma, ça a fait passer un moment.  Nous prenons un bus de nuit avec couchette pour Pakse (j’aime bien ce mot Pa Ksay). Le bus est presque parti à l’heure, juste 20 min de retard par rapport au 1h15 depuis Vang Vieng je dirais que c’est mieux. Nous étions allongés donc c’était assez confortable mais je n’ai presque pas dormi, j’ai eu la chance de voir un très beau lever du soleil.
