Finally I was going to explore Machu Picchu, after reading so much about it. We woke up at 5:40 A.M got on the train and waited for it to stop at Aguas Caliente. Got on a bus that led to Machu Picchu. After 20 minutes we finally reached it. It sits high in the Andes about 7000feet, it was built around 1450. I imagined it very crowded and huge. It was not bad at all, and it is build on top of a mountain so space is limited.

Ca y est enfin, j’allais explorer Machu Picchu, j’en a tellement entendu parlé et j’avais beaucoup lu d’articles pour mieux comprendre ce que c’était. Lever vers 5.40 pour prendre le train qui s’arrête dans la petite ville d’Aguas Caliente. Puis il faut prendre un bus qui met 20 minute et nous amène aux portes du domaine. Ce complexe de temple a été construit dans les Andes au milieu de nulle part, à 2430m, elle fut construite vers 1450. J’imaginais l’endroit bondé de touristes mais ça allait, il y en avait mais ce n’était pas l’horreur. Les temples étaient recouverts de brume si tôt le matin, ça donnait une atmosphère assez mystique et sereine à ces lieux.

One of the first temples we saw was the temple of the Condor. The Inca used a natural formation of rocks looking like an outspread wings of a condor, in the middle there was a condors head and neck feathers carved in a rock. Behind the temple was an underground dungeon.

Notre premier stop, le temple du Condor. Les Incas étaient très bon pour utiliser les formations rocheuses où ils avaient décidé de dédier un temple. Ici, une immense pierre rappelant les ailes d’un condor a donné son nom au temple.Ils y faisaient des rituels. Il y avait une pierre plate avec le tracé d’une tête d’oiseau. En bas de la grande pierre il y avait comme un caveau.

Then we went to Intiwatana. It is a column with four corners point to the 4 cardinal points, very important for the Inca used to predict the solstices. Every year on June, 21 on the solstice the high priest would tie a golden disk to the Intiwatana which would direct the sun to the ground to let the sun god know they were ready for another year’s cycle.

Puis nous avons vu Intiwatana. Une énorme pierre sculptée représente les 4 points cardinaux, elle était très important pour les Incas dans la prediction des solstices.Tous les ans le 21 juin pour le solstice d’été le grand prêtre attachait un disque en or sur la roche alors le soleil passant dans le cercle représentait le Dieu du Soleil. Ils étaient prêts pour une nouvelle année.

The terrace were amazing. The Inca didn’t just use the terraces for planting te crops, they also held up Machu Picchu, without the terraces it would have crumbled long ago. We also saw funerary rock, believed to be the place where Inca nobility were buried. The sacred rock was gigantic 3m high. The view was very nice and the walls around it were stunning, the stones were so finely cut that a pin couldn’t fit inside.

Les terraces étaient spectaculaires. Les terraces étaient là pour l’agriculture et fournir les céréales pour le site mais aussi pour maintenir l’ensemble des édifices. Il y a des speculations sur Machu Picchu, l’une d’elle veut que le site ait été crée pour enterrer les nobles. Il y a une énorme roche 3 m de haut appelée la Roche Sacrée, elle marque la limite de la cité vers le nord. Les constructions sont sans ciment, elles tiennent car elles ont été coupées de façon exacte, il serait difficile de glisser une épingle entre certaines.

The central plaza was a nice place a green expanse with roofless buildings next to it. In the morning there was a lot of fog but in the afternoon all of it went away. In the middle of the day we hiked the Huayna Picchu Mountain. The hike up was bitter and tiring but the views were all worth the pain. The hike back down was just as tiring. There a few other places we visited after hiking the mountain, such as the funerary rock which was thought to be the place were Inca nobility were mummified. It was also the greatest place to take a picture of the ruins.

La place centrale était large et recouverte d’herbe. La plupart des building n’ont plus leurs toits car ils ont été détruits avec le temps. L’après midi, la brume s’est dissipée pour laisser place à une vue spectaculaire. Nous avons eu la chance d’escalader Wayna Picchu, la montagne au nord de la cité. Seulement 200 personnes à la fois peuvent le faire. Pas une montée facile je dois vous dire, mais la vue de tout en haute SPECTACULAIRE! 

As I took my last glances at Machu Picchu I was thinking as we first came in to Peru I wanted it to go by really fast but now it is actually going to end in 2 days I am almost frightened about it. When we drove to Cusco and got on our plane I felt better.
Then we landed in Los Angeles. Our voyage was done yet another adventure was only beginning.

En admirant la cité une dernière fois, je me suis rappelé qu’en arrivant au Pérou je voulais que le voyage finisse le plus vite possible mais maintenant je ne veux pas qu’il s’arrête…De retour à Cusco pour prendre l’avion pour Lima puis décollage pour Los Angeles… Notre voyage est fini, mais c’est le début d’une nouvelle aventure….

The 7 hour bus ride came to a halt in a small town called Lago Agrio. We got onto a long narrow canoe called a Pirogue. I was starting to think that we were never going to make it to the lodge because we had a very long bus ride and then the canoe ride was never ending.

Je pensais que nous en avions fini avec les 7h de bus de nuit quand nous sommes arrivés dans la ville de Lago Agrio. Mais après  2 nouvelles heures de bus qui nous a amené au bord de la rivière un voyage en pirogue nous attendait. Je commençais à me demander si nous allions y arriver un jour à ce campement.

I was expecting to see a lot more animals but I guess we see what we can in the forest. The guides were incredible at spotting things. Ours spotted a small white Amazon tree boa, in the dark, and the boat was moving superfast. He saw a camouflaged poison dart frog and they are so tiny about 1inch big.

Je pensais que nous verrions plus d’animaux, mais en fait quand tu es dans la nature tu ne peux pas prédire ce que tu vas voir. Je dois dire que notre guide était quand même très bon pour repérer les animaux, une fois de nuit il a vu un boa constricteur dans un arbre quand nous nous promenions en pirogue. Il est arrivé à voir une de ses toutes petites grenouilles empoisonnées qui ne font que quelques centimètres.

On one trek we went on, it was incredibly rainy . We walked in the rain for hours and it became super muddy. There was an area called palm swamps and the mud nearly overflowed in my boots. I took a serious mud bath first my boot came completely off and my foot got drenched in mud I would have had to walk without a boot if a really nice Swiss person hadn’t pulled my boot out. After that I completely fell hands first in the deep mud, I was truly covered. But in the end I took a really nice swim in the Amazon River. Another day we saw the pink erawati river dolphins. They were more grey than pink and you only saw their fins and a part of their head. I was hoping to see an anaconda but those are a lot more active in the dry season. A bird that we saw a lot was the stinky turkey, they looked like fat phoenixes. When we were on a tour we spotted a snake bird, it was like a heron. It was just posing in so many ways, it was like it meant to put on a show.

Tous les jours nous partions soit en pirogue soit en balade dans la forêt à la découverte de ce monde. Une fois, il a plus toute la balade, heureusement ils nous prêtent des bottes et des ponchos, mais mes bottes étaient trop grandes! Avec la pluie c’était très boueux et à un moment donné nous sommes arrivés à un endroit appelé les palmiers marécageux. Mes bottes sont restées coincées dans la boue et je me suis retrouvé les pieds avec mes chaussettes à patauger dans la glaise! Un jeune Suisse du groupe m’a aidé à sortir mes bottes que j’ai remis comme ça. Je suis aussi tombé les mains dedans, j’étais très sale et tout mouillé. Quand nous sommes rentrés pour le déjeuner je me suis baigné dans la rivière. Tous les soirs nous partions en croisière pour voir le coucher du soleil sur une portion qui formait comme un lac et nous nous baignions avec les dauphins roses ou Botos. En fait, ils sont plutôt gris et ils ne sortent pas beaucoup de l’eau alors ils sont assez difficile à apercevoir. Je voulais vraiment voir un anaconda, mais il faut venir à la saison sèche où ils sont bien plus actifs. Un des oiseaux qu’on voyait tout le temps était hoazin huppé (dindon qui pue c’est son surnom!) ils ressemblaient à des phoenix avec leurs ailes ouvertes. L’oiseau serpent était très beau aussi avec le bout de ses ailes blanches et son corps noir, il nous a fait une vrai démonstration  en se tournant dans tous les sens et en ouvrant ses ailes.

Surprisingly I slept really well every night considering that the beds were basic. One day my mom woke up at 6:00 A.M to go bird watching and she said that she saw a lot of yellow macaws and toucans. Our guide said that we were lucky in see the animals that we saw because a lot of times there aren’t that much. We saw 3 sloths and both of the kinds, the 2 toed sloth and the 3 toed sloth. We saw 6 of 7 species of monkeys. We saw the red howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, little night monkey in their house, monk sacky monkey, white capuchins, and the woolly monkey. One night we went on the jungle walk where we saw scorpions, 3 giant tarantulas, a lobster cricket that was as big as my hand, and a night monkey that was active. After we went looking for caimans, we saw 2. One was a spectacle caiman that disappeared before we could take a picture, but the other was a black caiman and we just go a picture of him.

Je dormais super bien malgré que les lits soient assez simples. Ma mère s’est levé à 6h00 du mat pour observer les oiseaux depuis la tour d’observation, elle a vu des toucans et un couple d’aras bleus et jaune, un faucon et aussi un vautour. Notre guide nous a dit que nous avions en fait pu observer beaucoup d’animaux différents: nous avons vu 3 paresseux (2 griffes et 3 griffes), 6 des 7 espèces de singes : les Saïmiris (ou singe écureuils assez petits et gris), singe hurleur roux, les tous petits singes de nuits avec leurs gros yeux, singe laineux (grosse queue avec fourrure), capucins blancs, des tamarins. Pendant notre marche nocturne, nous avons pu observer des scorpions, un criquet langouste énorme et 3 tarentules géantes, mais aussi un singe de nuit actif dans les branches. Un autre soir, nous avons fait une balade en pirogue pour voir les caïmans, nous en avons vu 2, l’un deux à tout de suite disparu sous l’eau (et il peut y rester pendant 1h avant de ressortir) l’autre était un caïman noir.

We visited an Amazonian community. We learned how to make a kind of bread from manioc. It was like pita bread but the texture was like a bunch of bread crumbs made into a bread. After lunch we visited the Shaman. He was decorated with a headdress made from the feathers of exotic birds, necklaces made of animal teeth, nuts, and seeds. The law was that the shaman had to make everything himself. He said that to become a shaman you had to train for 15 years, those that trained for less were more like sorcerers than shamans. They were given a special drink called ayawasca. That put you in a kind of spiritual world. I learned how to fire a blow gun, and in 3 tries I hit the target. Melia’s dart landed 1 meter in front of it. Our guide showed us what a cocoa bean looks like before they get dried, they were encased in a white fruit that tasted exactly like mango.  It was nice to meet a lot of interesting people and see everything that we saw. After getting back to Quito for one more day we left for Lima Peru.

Nous avons aussi visité un village amazonien, ils ne vivent plus complètement reclus les seins nus etc. Ils veulent éduquer leurs enfants pour qu’ils préservent leur futur. Une des femmes du village nous a appris à faire une galette au manioc. Nous avons récolté le manioc dans le jardin, puis il a fallu le peler et ensuite le râper et l’essorer dans un panier pour le transformer en farine. J’ai bien aimé. Après le lunch, nous avons rendu visite au shaman (sorcier, médecin guérisseur du village). Il doit faire lui même sa tenue et sa coiffe avec des choses qu’il trouve dans la forêt: des noix, des haricots secs, des dents d’animaux, des plumes d’oiseaux. Il nous a expliqué qu’il faut 15 ans d’étude pour devenir shaman, et que ceux qui s’arrêtent au bout de 5 ans ne sont que des charlatans. Ils boivent une boisson hallucinogène appelée  ayahusca (breuvage à base de lianes) ils s’en servent pour lire les auras de la personne à soigner. Il nous a fait souffler dans sa sarbacane, il m’a fallu 3 essais pour atteindre ma cible. Mélia n’a pas été trop bonne à ça. Notre guide nous a aussi montré tous les fruits que l’on peut trouver dans cette forêt comme le cacao (avant qu’il ne devienne notre boisson) ça avait plus le goût de la mangue.

J’ai bien aimé ma rencontre avec plein de jeunes de tous les pays avec qui j’ai joué à Jenga. Puis il a fallu rentré sur Quito avant notre départ le lendemain pour le Pérou et Lima.

We landed on the island of Baltra, it reminded me so much of Arizona. A dry desert looking, with trees that could have been paloverdes. I immediately notice a large yellow land iguana blocking our path.

Nous avons atterri sur l’ile de Baltra, je me serais cru en Arizona. Le paysage était désertique avec des cactus et des arbres ressemblant aux paloverdes. Sur la route, première rencontre avec les locaux un iguane jaune terrestre.

We arrived in town it was fairly late on the island of Santa Cruz. As we were walking around I noticed black tip reef sharks, I spotted at least 2 dozen of them right there in the harbour. I looked to the other side of the dock and there were some sea lions. I rushed to the platform and saw 3 sea lions just chilling. I must have gotten too close and they barked at me which really scared me. My dad had told me about the local fish market. I had pictured them to be filled with fish, pelicans and sea lions. There were some big fish, like tunas and medium sized sharks. Once a sea lion grabbed the head of one of the tuna and ran away but the guy chased him, he dropped the head and went into the water. It was really hysterical. It was amazing how the wild life wasn’t scared of people. The same day I saw a sea turtle in the harbor.

Notre destination finale  est Puerto Aroya sur l’ile de Santa Cruz. Après avoir laisser nos valises à l’hotel nous avons fait une balade jusqu’au port. J’ai tout de suite vu les requins à pointe noire, il y en avait près de 24. De l’autre côté du port, il y avait des otaries, je me suis dépêché d’aller les voir de plus près, 3 se reposaient sur la plateforme. J’ai du m’approcher trop près car le plus gros m’a aboyé dessus, comme je ne m’y attendais pas ça m’a vraiment surpris. Mon père m’avait parlé du marché des poissonniers locaux. C’est tout un spectacle avec les poissons qui arrivent posés à même le sol, les poissonniers qui les nettoient (coupent la tête et enlèvent l’intérieur) et le reste de la clique les otaries qui reçoivent les abats et les pelicans qui attendent les miettes. A un moment donné, une otarie a essayé de voler une tête de thon, le pêcheur lui est parti après jusqu’à ce qu’elle retourne dans l’eau, c’était très marrant. Les animaux n’avaient pas peur des gens mais par contre tu ne peux pas les caresser ou t’approcher de trop près, c’était une bonne balance avec la nature. Ce jour là j’ai aussi vu une tortue marine dans le port.

We had booked a tour for half the day and we were supposed to see blue footed boobies, sea turtles, marine iguanas, and sea lions. We saw all of them which was nice because we usually only see 75% of the stuff we’re supposed to see. We started with a cruise around the harbor where we saw the blue footed boobies. We then went on a hike to see the marine iguanas there were a lot of them. It was a little bit scary because they blended in with the black lava rocks and you didn’t see them very much. There was a rock with hundreds of red amazing looking crabs. My dad and I chased them and it was like the entire rock exploded with crabs. Then we went snorkeling, seconds after I got off the boat my mom spotted a sea turtle, for minutes I was swimming right next to it. So close that I touched its shell. I was swimming with it until I noticed another turtle, and with this one I actually rode it. I grabbed its shell and let it take me for a ride. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. On a part of the tour we went to this canyon that was filled with clear green water. It was called Las Grietas. They are trying to keep a max of 50 people in at one time to make sure it is not destroyed. Good idea.

Nous avons pris une petite croisière pour voir un peu plus de vie sauvage comme les fous aux pattes bleues, les iguanes marins, les tortues et les otaries. Ce sont des otaries et pas des lions de mer car elles ont de petites oreilles. Nous avons tout vu, avec les animaux sauvages ce n’est pas toujours le cas. Nous avons fait une balade sur une plage où il n’y a que des iguanes qui se pavanent sur les roches noires volcaniques, c’était délicat car ils se confondaient avec les pierres. Il y avait aussi plein de crabes qui deviennent orange à l’âge adulte. Nous les avons chassé à un moment donné et c’était comme si tout d’un coup des milliers de crabes orange couraient sur les pierres noires. Puis nous avons fait un peu de nage avec masque et tuba, ma mère a tout de suite repéré une tortue marine. C’était super de nager autour d’elle pendant assez longtemps et tu peux même toucher sa carapace. Puis j’en ai vu une autre et celle là j’ai tenu un peu sa carapace et j’ai nagé avec elle super cool. Nous sommes allés jusqu’à un endroit appelé Las Grietas. C’est un peu comme une piscine naturelle il ne laisse que 50 personnes à la fois dans cet endroit pour le préserver.
Back in town we explored jewelry shops and other cool stores. The shops were nice. At night there was always a big place where everybody was selling fresh seafood. We got 2 langustinos that were like giant Moreton bay bugs. I couldn’t get over how there were sea lions, sharks and sea turtles in the harbor. The next day we took a boat to another island of the Galapagos, San Cristobal.

De retour en ville, nous nous sommes baladés il y avait quelque magasins sympas. Pour le diner nous sommes allés dans la rue des pêcheurs. Là ils installent tables et chaise et font griller du poissons très frais, nous avons mangé de la langouste locale différente de celle que je connaissais. Le lendemain nous avons pris un petit bateau pendant 2 h pour rejoindre l’île de San Cristobal.

When we arrived I noticed that it was a lot different than Santa Cruz. There was a beach full of sea lions, the hotels were nicer. But the town wasn’t as nice. We went on a lot of day trips, my favorite was the trip that we went to Kicker Rock. We started our trip with a small fishing trip I was super happy because I caught a huge 40 lbs. wahoo. But what I didn’t like is that they said we were going to eat it for lunch but they didn’t prepare it. So it was an act of selfishness that showed that they just wanted the fish for themselves. After fishing we went to a small part of the Island where we saw not just blue footed boobies but also red footed boobies. They were really cool to see that they had vivid red feet and blue beaks. There were a lot of sea lions also. When we arrived to kicker rock I saw just how big and impressive it was. We went snorkeling and the water was bone chilling. There were 2 sea turtles, a forest of puffer fish which was really awesome, a black tip reef shark, and some sea lions. I really think that the trip was worth the $640 we paid for it. A few more days of watching sea lions and birds we left for the Amazon.

J’ai tout de suite remarqué que cette île était différente d’où nous venions. La plage de la ville était remplie d’otaries, et notre hôtel était mieux. Mais la ville en elle même était très basique. Nous avons visité à pied certaines plages comme Tijateras ou playman mais nous avons aussi fait le tour de l’île en bateau mon excursion préférée. Après 1h sur la mer nous avons ralenti pour pêcher, j’étais content car ma ligne à attraper un wahoo d’à peu près 20kg, ils m’ont aidé à le remonter sur la bateau car c’était trop difficile. Je pensais que nous allions le manger pour le lunch mais en fait ils l’ont gardé pour eux alors j’étais un peu déçu. En continuant nous sommes allés sur des plages magnifiques complètement désertes comme Casa Blanca. Nous avons vu beaucoup d’oiseaux, et d’otaries avec qui j’ai nagé. Mais le clou de la balade était de nager à Kicker Rock, l’eau devait être à 17, on s’est gelé. Mais j’ai vu 2 tortues marines, des poissons qui gonflent, et beaucoup de toute sorte de poissons, mon père a vu des requins. C’est l’endroit pour voir les requins marteaux mais il faut plonger. Ce n’était pas donné $640 mais c’était une expérience unique.Nous passons des Galapagos à la forêt Amazonienne. Ca va être un grand changement. 

The Day was going perfectly we got to the Airport on time, checked off our bags, and got on the plane. When suddenly the announcement came we are not going to be able to go to Cuenca due to weather conditions. I knew that was a lie because every one that was on the plane with us was saying that the weather in Cuenca was fine. So our plane was canceled for a reason nobody knew. Instead we had to take a plane to Guayaquil and take an exasperating 3:00 hour taxi drive to Cuenca. The drive over there was supposed to be really nice but we couldn’t see anything because it was night time. When the car finally arrived it felt like my stomach was doing backflips. We had to climb over the Cajas which is a beautiful national park.

Notre journée avait parfaitement commencé, nous étions à l’heure pour prendre notre avion, nos bagages étaient enregistrés et nous étions dans l’avion. Puis l’hôtesse a fait un annoncement et il fallait que nous débarquions. Notre avion ne pouvait pas atterrir car il pleuvait sur Cuenca, et la semaine dernière un avion était sorti de la piste d’atterrissage et il pleuvait ce jour là. En fait ils ont des mesures drastiques car tous les gens de Cuenca nous ont dit qu’il faisait une petite pluie seulement. Donc notre vol a été annulé, nous en avons pris un pour Guayaquil puis un taxi et soit disant 3h de route jusqu’à Cuenca. Nous l’avons fait de nuit en étant arrivé à Guayaquil vers 19h, c’est dommage car la route est supposée être très spectaculaire surtout les Cajas, tout en haut de montagnes avec des lacs et des lamas qui se promènent. Quand nous sommes arrivés à notre destination j’avais mon estomac tout retourné. C’est très montagneux dans les andes, nous sommes passé par les cajas un parc national absolument magnifique.

The next day we met up with some friends that my dad met in Massachusetts Tim and Suzette. They brought some of their friends John, Debbie, and Jolene. For the rest of the day we were getting a tour of the town by Tim and Suzette.We visited churches and museum, I loved the exhibit about Amazon, they had shrunken heads very creepy. When we all met back at this amazing restaurant called Anima. The presentations were spectacular sauces were arranged in drawings like, a fish skeleton or hunters and animals. One of the appetizers was in a bird’s eye chili plant. They stuffed Albano peppers and you just took the peppers of the plant. There was focaccia with humus. They had juices in small test tubes which was really cool. One dish had whole prawns (shrimp) on fish hooks suspended on a stick structure, which I though was the coolest presentation I had ever seen on any dish. It was incredibly cheap, for american standards, we were 9 people we had 2 bottles of wine, juices for Melia and I.

Le lendemain, nous avons rencontré les amis de mes parents du MA Tim et Suzette, nous avons pris le petit déjeuner avec eux et certains de leurs amis américains ou norvégienne le couple John et Debbie et aussi Jolene. Le reste de la journée nous avons visité la ville avec notre guide Suzette. J’ai adoré le musée de la ville, sur la partie de l’Amazonie ils avaient des têtes toutes petites de la tribu des Jivaro, je n’avais jamais rien vu de tel, assez dégoûtant. Le soir nous nous sommes tous retrouvés au restaurant Anima. La présentation des plats était tout simplement géniale. Ils ont dessiné avec des sauces dans les assiettes, mon père avait ses langoustines accrochées à des hameçons. Pour l’apéritif ils ont servi une plante de piments avec des piments fourrés à grignoter, ils ont servi la focaccia avec du humus dans une boite, nos jus étaient dans des tubes à essais. Pas très cher pour 9 personnes avec 2 bouteilles de vin et des jus. Nous avons passé une super soirée.

The following day we visited villages that worked at a special handy craft. My favorite was the panama hats. When we first arrived they weren’t open. So for 30 minutes my sister and I were zipping on a tiny zip line. It was actually really fun because you went superfast and at the end it made swing upwards. My sister and I were always fighting for who would have it. I tried going on my stomach but it made me drag my legs and almost die. When the shop opened my mom bought one. They put it in this huge press, which was what gave it its form. Then they used antique sewing machines to make a ribbon that could slightly improve the size.

Nous avons visité les villages alentours qui sont en fait spécialisés dans un artisanat. Le village de Sisig où ils font les chapeaux de Panama. La coopérative du village n’était pas encore ouverte quand nous sommes arrivés alors pendant 30 minutes avec ma soeur nous nous sommes éclatés sur un terrain de jeu pas très loin à faire de la tyrolienne. J’ai essayé de me mettre sur le ventre mais me jambes traînaient et je me suis fait mal. Ma mère a acheté son chapeau. La femme l’a mis dans une grande presse pour lui donner sa forme, puis avec une vieille machine à coudre elle a fait le ruban.

There was also the jewelry village which wasn’t my kind of place. It seemed like everyone was selling the same kind of jewelry. My mom liked and bought something, but since I’m not a big jewelry fan I didn’t like that place.

Nous sommes passé dans le village des bijoutiers. J’avais l’impression qu’ils vendaient tous la même chose. Ma mère a acheté quelque chose, mais comme je ne suis pas un grand fan de bijoux je n’ai pas trop aimé cet endroit.

We went to a nice sushi restaurant with Tim and Suzette. There was a big plater for 4 that had a bunch of different kinds of sushi and sashimi. I got a separate kind of sushi and it was my favorite out of all them.

Pour diner nous avons retrouvé tim et Suzette dans un restaurant japonais. Nous avions un grand plateau avec des sushis et des sashimis. Mais j’ai préféré le sushi que j’avais commandé à part.  

The passing day we went to this really nice spa. We first went to a mud treatment which I thought that it was going to be this pool of mud but it was a hot pool that you put mud on yourself. It looked like we had a different skin color when we were completely covered in the mud. The mud was to exfoliate the skin. Then there were these amazing subterranean hot tubs. There was a hot one and a cold one. The point was that when you transferred to the cold tub your blood wen to your core and when you went back into the hot one your blood went to your limbs. So the point was to circulate your blood. When I went into the cold one it felt like my body was tightening, and when I went back into the hot tub it felt like my hands and feet were on fire. Probably one of the weirdest things ever were the box steam baths. It looked like a torture machine. You sat on a chair and adjust the dial to the way you wanted it. I put a lot of steam in and I was dripping like crazy. It was truly a really weird treatment. The bad thing was that the steam made me lose all my tan that I had to suffer with sunburns to get. When we left I felt incredibly clean, and really tired.

Comme il faisait beau nous avons passé la matinée dans un centre de thalasso super bien. Nous avons passé 20minutes dans un sauna puis premier bain de boue rouge, celle là pour exfolier. Il fallait se couvrir de boue puis la laisser sécher. Puis bain de boue bleue grise pour nourrir cette fois. Dans une grotte souterraine allumée par des bougies il y avait une piscine d’eau chaude et une de froide. Il fallait rester 15 min dans la chaude puis 3 min dans la glacée, soit disant pour faire circuler le sang. Quand je passais du chaud au froid c’était dur mais du froid au chaud j’avais l’impression que mes mains et pieds étaient en feu. Mais le truc le plus étrange que j’ai fait était les boites à vapeur! Tu t’assoies sur un banc en bois puis ils te ferment dans une boite avec de la vapeur, je suais beaucoup, j’ai trouvé ça très bizarre. Quand tout était fini, ma peau était toute douce mais je me sentais complètement vidé.

When it was around 8:00 at night there was a symphony that you could see for free. I had heard the song that they were playing but didn’t know what it was. I knew that it was Mozart, and my mom told me that the song was the marriage of Figaro. The second piece I had no idea what it was. It turned out being Mendelssohn, Violin Concert. There was a famous French violinist, Gille Lefevre. How he played was astonishing the speed of which he played and without music was incredible. It was really cool but at the end I was a bit bored because it was a bit long for me.

Ce soir, il y a une symphonie qui se produit dans une magnifique vieille cathédrale et c’est gratuit. J’ai reconnu le premier morceau mais je ne connaissais pas le nom. Ma mère m’a dit que c’était de Mozart les Noces de Figaro. Le deuxième morceau a duré 25min, c’était de Mendelssohn, Gilles Lefevre un français maitre violoniste les accompagnés. Il jouait à une vitesse exceptionnelle. J’ai aimé mais j’ai trouvé ça un peu long après plus d’une heure.

After an extremely long flight from Fiji to Los Angeles. We had a 5 hour layover and we got to see my Aunt and Uncle which was really nice because we hadn’t seen them since the thanks giving of 2014.

Après un très très long voyage en avion nous avons atterri à Los Angeles avec un stop de 5h. Ma tante et mon oncle nous ont rejoint et nous avons mangé le diner ensemble. Cela faisait longtemps que je ne les avais pas vu.

We were extremely jet lags and the first few days we needed to cope with it. We went to the Ottovalo market, it was one of the biggest markets in South America. Most people were selling artisanal goods like blankets, trinkets, jewelry, and shoes. We bought a lot of the blankets made from baby alpaca, they are really soft. We ate at this tiny  stand in the middle of the market. They were selling tornados, it is a whole roasted hog. They pulled the meat out and serve it with beans and corn. I myself preferred the porchetta from Italy than the hornados but my mom, sister and dad preferred the hornados. We explored some more of the market buying more blankets, and a stress ball. My dad bought a panama hat for the deal of a lifetime it was $15, others ranged from 25 to $30. Panama hats are from Ecuador and not Panama, Ecuadorian helping build the Panama Canal were wearing these to protect them from the sun, the foreigner liked them and thought they were from Panama. It was a long day, we stop also at a waterfall, I was happy to return to the apartment.

Nous avons eu du mal avec le décalage horaire, il nous a fallu plusieurs jours pour récupérer. Puis nous sommes allés au marché d’Ottovalo, c’est l’un des plus grands marchés artisanaux de l’Amérique du Sud. Ils vendaient des couvertures, des bibelos, des bijoux, des chaussures et d’autres choses. C’était très coloré et très vivant. Nous avons acheté des couvertures en bébé alpaca, très douces. Nous avons mangé dans un petit stand sur le marché une spécialité Hornado, en fait c’est un gros cochon grillé servi avec du maïs, mon papi Jöel aurait beaucoup aimé. Moi j’ai préféré le porchetta en Italie(un peu la même chose), mes les autres ont bien aimé celui ci. Le marché est très très grand nous avons beaucoup marché, mais après tout se ressemblait un peu à mon goût. Nous avons aussi acheté une balle contre le stress, une gourde et mon père a acheté un chapeau de Panama pour $15. Il faut que je vous explique que les cha[eaux de Panama en fait viennent de l’Equateur, pendant la construction du canal de Panama, il y avait des travailleurs de l’Equateur qui portaient des chapeaux pour se protéger du soleil, et les étrangers ont aimé ces chapeaux. Comme ils étaient au Panama, ils les ont appelé chapeau de Panama mais en fait ils sont fabriqués en Equateur. Nous avons vu une cascade.  Après cette longue journée j’étais content de rentrer à l’appart.

On a Monday we went to the Centro historico. There were tons of old houses, churches they all have Spanish name like San Fransisco, San Catalina, San Augustin and town museums. We very unexpectedly came across the President of Ecuador. Every Monday He comes out and waves to everybody from his balcony. There was this huge ceremony with a marching band and guards in costumes. So it was pretty cool being able to say that I saw the President of Ecuador Mr Rafael Correa. I am not a huge fan of churches, and we did visit a lot. The Spanish did destroy a lot of Inca buildings to use the stone to build them. Some date from the 1590 and they are still there.

Le lundi nous sommes allés visiter le Centre Historique de Quito. Il y avait beaucoup de vieilles maisons, des églises (qui ont toutes des noms espagnols), de musées. Petite histoire, tous les lundis le Président du pays se montre au balcon du palais présidentiel et salue la foule. Le tout avec le changement des gardes en uniformes et fanfare. J’ai trouvé ça cool de voir le Président de l’equateur Rafael Correo. Je dois dire que je ne suis pas un grand fan de toutes ses églises, il y en avait trop. Les Espagnols ont détruits les bâtiments Incas pour construire leurs églises ou monastères qui datent de 1590 et sont toujours là.

We also went to Mito del Mundo (middle of the world). I walked over to the line indicating the Equator, it was really strange knowing that I was walking on the middle of the world. There was several experience to show the magnetism of this place,  you had to balance an egg on a nail, it seems easy and it was, but the scientific part of it was that you could only do it on the Equator. I encourage to try. The way water flow in a sink, they had 2 sinks on each side and you could fill them up and watch the movement of the water when it drain, opposite direction.

Avez vous entendu parlé d’un endroit qui s’appelle le Milieu du monde? Mitad Del Mundo. En fait à cet endroit vous êtes au milieu du monde sur l’équateur. Ils ont une ligne qui marque la délimitation. On peut être à la fois dans l’hémisphère nord et l’hémisphère sud quand on a un pied de chaque côté! Les français ont beaucoup menaient d’expedition pour trouver le veritable endroit magnétique du temps des rois. On pouvait faire des expériences pour voir l’influence du magnétisme. Par example, ici c’est le seul endroit sur la line ou on peu faire balancer un oeuf sur un clou, et j’y suis arrivé! Essayez de le faire à la maison pour voir si ça va marcher. Bon courage! Ils avaient 2 éviers un de chaque côté de la ligne équatoriale et on pouvait observer le mouvement de l’eau dans les 2 et en fait l’eau tourbillonne en opposé. 

My favorite stop in Quito was the Guayasamin art gallery. He is considered the Picasso of Ecuador. His paintings reflects people that had suffered deeply. He painted the Incas being attacked by the Spanish. The Africans being torn from Africa. I saw a lot sadness and fright in his paintings. I thought his art was really abstract and incredible. There was a video showing him painting a portrait of someone and it was really interest how he described his paintings and how he painted this portrait. I know that I would never be able to make painting like his.

Mon endroit préféré à Quito a été la visite du musée et de la maison de l’artiste Guayasamin. Il est considéré comme le Picasso équatorien. Ses peinture sont très grandes et elles expriment souvent les grandes souffrances de certains peuples comme les Incas ou les Africains quand ils ont été déracinés. Il y avait beaucoup de tristesse et de peur. A un moment donné on a visionné une vidéo de l’artiste quand il faisait un portrait d’un grand musicien espagnol de Flamenco, il allait très vite je ne serais jamais aussi bon que lui.

We had dinner at a really nice restaurant called El Ventanal with the grandparents of one of my best friend when I was living in Massachusetts Mateo. They are really nice people, they came and took us to this amazing restaurant above the old town, it was all illuminated at night and the restaurant had huge windows so you could enjoy the view and great food  too. It was a very nice evening.

Un soir, nous avons mangé dans un très bon restaurant le Ventanal avec les grand-parents d’un de mes meilleurs amis de Massachusetts, Matéo. Ils étaient très très gentils. Ce restaurant était en hauteur au dessus de la vieille ville et tout était illuminé. La nourriture était super bonne. C’était une très bonne soirée.

When we arrived at the Naqalia lodge and we were greeted with Fijians playing the guitar and singing. We got our bungalow and explored the place a little. The people were so nice and they really made sure that you were having fun and you were happy, and they did a really nice job doing so. Every day we went on snorkeling trips and picnics. The snorkeling wasn’t that bad, I was really expecting sea turtles and other cool sea creatures. But there weren’t, although one day I saw a tiny moray eel in some seaweed. I was also thinking that the beaches of Fiji were the lagoon like beaches with the perfect white sand, and turquoise waters.

Quand nous sommes arrivés à notre hotel le Naqalia lodge nous avons été reçus avec des chansons et un joueur de guitare sur la plage. Après nous être installés, nous avons fait un petit tour des environs pour nous repérer. Le personnel très nombreux était vraiment très sympathique, ils voulaient vraiment que notre séjour se déroule bien. Tous les jours nous avons fait du snorkeling en groupe et des pique-niques. Le snorkeling était ok, mais j’espérais tellement nager avec des tortues et d’autres créatures, que j’étais un peu déçu de ne voir que des étoiles de mer ou une murène. Je pensais que les plages étaient aussi spectaculaire que Whitehaven beach en Australie blanches et des eaux turquoises.

Every night there would be dances, I won limbo the one time they played it then there would be the cava ceremony. It was a tradition to do when a new member of a clan came in. I participated in it most nights. The cava tasted like water with dirt and soap, I once took the high tide bowl without thought and I regretted a lot. My favorite picnic was the first one we went on. I spent most of my time digging like a miner with a stick that I found, because it looked like a pix axe. For the actual lunch there was fish, potato salad and fruit. After lunch everyone went snorkeling. I definitely say the coolest thing I saw was a huge starfish with a dozen legs and lots of spikes. I also saw some squids.

Pendant les repas, ils jouaient de la guitare et chantaient des chansons locales. Un soir il y a eu comme une petite fête, où on a dansé et j’ai gagné le concours de limbo. Ils ont une cérémonie très traditionnelle qui s’appelle CAVA. Quand on a arrive dans un village ou que l’on est nouveau dans un clan on doit faire cette cérémonie. Je l’ai faite presque tous les soirs. Tu dois boire le cava ça a le goût de l’eau mélangée avec de la terre et du savon. Ce sont des racines qu’ils broient et ils les mélangent avec de l’eau puis ils essorent ça et tu bois le jus. Une fois j’ai demandé ma coupe pleine et j’ai vite regretté…c’était un peu trop mais j’ai tout bu. Nous avons fait plusieurs pique niques, mon préféré était celui du premier jour où nous sommes allés sur la plage de l’autre côté de l’île. Je me suis amusé sur la plage à creuser avec un drôle de baton que j’avais trouvé. Pour manger, il y avait du poisson, salade de pomme de terre et des fruits.  Pendant notre snorkeling, j’ai vu une drôle étoile de mer avec 12 bras et des pics, elles n’existent qu’ici apparement, et aussi des seiches elles nagent de façon super bizarre.

Melia and I went on a shark feeding adventure. It was by far my favorite thing we did. We were swimming with wild white tip reef sharks and they were a decent size at least 4 ¾ ft. There was another group of 10 people and they were so rude they were always kick everybody else. The Fijian staff from of bungalows were grabbing the sharks and swimming under water with them.  I did feel how they didn’t have any bones just cartilage. One of the sharks was trying to get out of our guides grip and it looked like it was trying to attacking me. It was trying to lunge out in my direction. It was so cool when they swam up to me and circled me. It was a true experience for me.

Avec ma soeur nous avons participé à une sortie en mer avec rencontre de requins. De loin ce que j’ai préféré ici. Nous avons nagé avec des requins récifs à pointe blanche, ils étaient de bonne taille plus ou moins 1,60m. Il y avait un autre groupe de 10 personnes avec nous je n’ai pas trop aimé car ces adultes te passaient devant ou te donnaient des coups de palme. Nos guides du resort sont des nageurs exceptionnels, et ils arrivaient à attraper les requins et nageaient avec eux jusqu’au fond.  J’en ai touché un et tu réalises alors qu’ils n’ont pas d’os mais ont seulement du cartilage. A un moment donné, un des requins essayait de se défaire de l’emprise de notre guide et en se débattant, il s’est dirigé vers moi à grande vitesse, un peu peur. Mais c’était cool quand ils me tournaient autour. Une expérience que je n suis pas près d’oublier. 

The same day I went hand line fishing with my dad. I didn’t catch anything which really sucked but our boat captain caught a small white tip reef shark. It wasn’t so much a fish trip because we barely caught anything but it was more of a sunset cruise, and the sunset was beautiful.

Le soir je suis allé pécher avec mon père. Il y a pas mal de poissons mais nous n’avons pas eu de chance car je n’ai rien attrapé. Le capitaine a attrapé un petit requin que nous avons relâché. Au lieu de poissons, nous avons pu admirer un super coucher de soleil.

We went to white sandy beach, another island, we took a small boat and it was rough to go there, I was completely wet by the time we arrive. The beach was large but not as white as I was imagining with this kind of name. I played on the beach and swam a little, then we had a pique nique on the beach and Sam played music for us. The ride back was much nicer.

Nous avons fait une sortie sur l’île Plage de Sable Blanc, nous sommes partis dans une petite barque et le voyage aller a été assez agité, j’étais tout trempe quand nous sommes arrivés. La plage était grande et bien protégée mais pas avec du sable blanc, le nom était trompeur. Je me suis amusé sur la plage et j’ai un peu nagé puis nous avons fait un pique nique et Sam nous a joué de la guitare bien sûr.

We took the ferry back to the main island. We hopped on a bus for our hotel. I had no idea what it looked like or where it was, until our bus stopped at this amazing looking place. In my head it was thinking I wish we were staying here and it turned out we were. The Sofitel hotel was beautiful. The next day, I explored all the activities. Every day there would be something different. Like pottery and kite making both of which I did. The kite making was a little bit boring because we only made one kite and only the instructor got to fly it. I wasn’t that bummed out by it because it’s just a kite, I could make those any time. I mostly swam in the pool. Another day we visited the harbor and I found this really cool shirt which I thought would be perfect for a souvenir. The 2 days that we stayed at the Sofitel were the same, eat a huge breakfast because they had this huge buffet, go to the pool, do the activities, dinner and go to the room. The second day we had to stay up until 2:00 A.M for our plane to Ecuador. On our way with the flight we would stop in Los Angeles for a layover and we would visit my Aunt Michele. Then it was flying off to Ecuador.

Nous avons repris le ferry pour l’île principale. Un bus nous attendait pour nous amener à notre hôtel. Quand il s’est arrêté devant un endroit magnifique, je me suis dit qu’est ce que j’aimerai que ce soit le notre. A ma grande surprise mon père m’a dit que nous étions arrivés à notre hôtel! le Sofitel était magnifique. Le lendemain, j’ai exploré le lieu et fait des activités. Il y en avait des différentes tous les jours, comme poterie (j’ai fait une tortue symbole de longévité pour les Fidjiens) ou faire un kite (l’instructeur ne nous a pas trop laissé faire tout seul). J’ai surtout bien profité de la piscine. Nous sommes retournés au port car ils avaient des magasins sympas et j’ai acheté un T shirt comme souvenir. Nous sommes restés 2 jours, et fait plus ou moins la même chose: manger un gros petit déjeuner car le buffet était énorme et tu pouvais prendre de tout, aller à la piscine et faire des activités. Notre vol pour l’Equateur ne partait pas avant 2.00 du matin, longue journée! Puis nous avons fait une escale à Los Angeles et ma tante Michelle avec son mari Donny sont venus nous rejoindre pendant quelques heures avant notre vol suivant.

We landed super early at 6.00 on Easter, our place was not ready until 2.00pm so we had time to kill, we spent it mostly at a place called the Lagoon. We stayed 2 nights until we got our camper-van. We only had to pay 1AUD a day because it was a relocation. Our first day in the van we only drove, we had to cover a lot of miles.

Nous avons atterri super tôt à 6.00 du mat. Malheureusement pour nous notre appart n’était pas près avant 14h00, alors pour tuer le temps nous nous sommes installés près du lagon, une grande piscine communale gratuite pour tout le monde. Nous sommes restés 2 jours à Cairns je soigne une otite, oui après l’angine l’otite alors pas de baignade… Puis mes parents récupèrent le camping car qu’ils ont loué, on le ramène pour la compagnie jusqu’à Brisbane. Ca tombe bien car c’est là où nous allons, le tout pour plus ou moins 1 dollar par jour. (En fait sans compter l’assurance, fuel etc). Ca va il est bien grand. Jour 1 ça a été route non stop…pas le plus fun, mais bon il fait avancer.

On day 2 we took a hyper fast speed boat to the Whitsundays Islands. We got to our snorkeling spot and found it very disappointing there was nothing special to it. I thought the Great Barrier Reef would be amazing with sea turtles, amazing coral and anemones, and incredible fish and sea creatures. There were some but we had seen better in Indonesia. Later we went on a bush walk, we anchored the boat to a sea turtle hot spot. There were so many I saw at least 5 and they were huge, too bad I was not swimming at that time. The walk wasn’t anything special but when we reached the top the view was breathtaking. Whitehaven beach was laying in front of my eyes, it is the most incredible beach I had ever seen. The sand is 98.8% silica it is so fine that it makes a shrieking sound when you walked in. It is considered the whitest beach on earth and one the the smallest sand grain, so thin that NASA used it to make the lens of the Hubble space telescope. It almost made spirals and the water was as blue as blue can be or aquamarine. We stuck around for a while watching the little sting rays and fish go by. Then we had lunch and I went for a little swim (you had to wear stinger suits because of the jellyfish). Goanna’s are like monitor lizards and we saw three of them in the shaded area. They seemed awfully comfortable around us but  one was getting really close so we backed off. It was time to leave back to Airlie Beach. The boat had 2 engines with 600 horse powers. When the skipper pushed the throttle, it was so fast it backed you up against your seat. We got back to the camper-van park, it was in the nature and there were birds every where, especially cockatoos.

Jour 2: croisière dans les iles  Whitesundays (découverte par Capitaine Cook en 1770) sur un bateau très rapide. Nous arrivons à l’endroit pour faire du snorkeling et bien grosse déception car nous n’avons rien vu de trop spécial, je pensais voir plein de tortues et du corail différent. En fait nous avons vu mieux en Indonésie. Nous sommes montés au sommet d’une petite colline pour avoir une belle vue et là où nous avons ancré le bateau il y avait plein de tortues! J’en ai vu au moins 5 grosses, dommage que ce n’était plus le moment de nager. La vue était à couper le souffle, devant moi la plage de Whitehaven, la plus belle que j’ai jamais vu. L’eau était bleu marine et vert d’eau à la fois. Elle est très spéciale car c’est le sable le plus blanc et le plus fin au monde. NASA l’a utilisé pour faire le verre de leur télescope Hubble. Puis nous sommes tous allés à la plage pour le lunch et nager. Il fallait mettre une combinaison car il y a beaucoup de méduses ici.  Juste avant de partir sous les arbres, j’ai vu des goannas (grands lézards moniteurs coin), ils avaient l’air un peu trop confortables à mon goût l’un d’eux se rapprochait trop près, alors je me suis éloigné. Il était temps de partir pour Airlie Beach, c’était super le capitaine allait super vite et il passait dans les vagues des autres bateaux. De retour à notre campement, douche et repos, nous étions dans un endroit très naturel avec des oiseaux tout autour comme des perroquets et surtout des cacatoès.

Day 3 of the camper van trip, we went to the town of Rockhampton the Beef capital of Australia. There wasn’t anything very interesting about it, I didn’t see many cows in the pastures. But the next day we started our day by going to the Rockhampton zoo. It was a little bit small, but I still enjoyed it. There was a gargantuan crocodile he was a good 4 meters, and 1 meter in width. We saw a cassowary which just looked prehistoric and amazing you can only find them in Australia. There was a monitor lizard and a koala. There were also chimpanzee’s which I had never seen before.

Jour 3: arrêt dans la ville de Rockhampton la capitale du boeuf Australien. Pour moi c’était juste une ville normale. Je n’ai pas vu tant d’animaux que ça. Le jour suivant nous avons fait un stop au zoo local, il était petit mais j’aime bien voir les animaux. Ils avaient un énorme crocodile il devait faire au moins 3 m de long. J’ai aussi vu un casoar animal préhistorique qui ne vit qu’ici, un koala endormi (comme d’habitude), des chimpanzés (c’était la première fois que j’en vois de ci près.

After the zoo we headed  to Noosa to visit one of my Dads friends from when he was yachting called Maria. We met her at the farmers market. Then she showed us around and went to a beach. The life guards were always yelling at you, we had to be careful of the rip current. After swimming were gather seafood for a riverside picnic. There were Moreton bay bugs (which I had never had before), prawns, oysters, smoked salmon, cheeses, breads and crackers. My favorite thing was the Moreton bay bugs they were like lobster except a lot fishier. The next day we said our goodbyes and after a little bit of driving we were in Brisbane.

Direction Noosa au nord de Brisbane, pour voir Maria une amie de mon père du temps des yachts. Nous nous sommes retrouvés au marché local. Elle nous a montré le coin puis nous nous sommes baignés. Je n’ai pas trop aimé les sauveteurs, il était  interdit de nager trop loin de nager en dehors des drapeaux…Après la baignade, nous avons préparé un pique nique pour manger à la rivière. Maria avait pris des Moreton bay bugs (sorte de langouste locale mais avec un goût plus salé), des crevettes crues et cuites, des huîtres, du saumon fumé, des fromages avec du pain et des crackers. J’ai adoré les Moreton Bay bugs. Le lendemain de nouveau sur le départ pour Brisbane.

Our camper van trip was done. We got to Brisbane and got a rental car, and off to the apartment. The next day we visited another one of my dad’s old friends from his yachting days. His real name was David Sharp but we called him Sharpie. He took us on his boat The Liberty. We were go fishing which I was deeply looking forward to but the ocean was to rough which made me sad and disappointed. But I got to learn how to drive a boat which was Awesome, David is really nice he just let me do it with nobody around and we were going pretty fast. When we got back to his apartment we got to meet his girlfriend Anita. They took us to a surf club for dinner we had seafood platters. The following day we went to beach then later we gathered supplies for a big dinner. I prepared stuffed patty pans with a panko crust. Melia made the brownies. Sharpie made a shrimp ceviche and my dad did some shrimps with chorizo and also did the huge mud crab. David did not have a pot big enough to cook the huge crab so we had to improvise and when my dad put the crab in the pan to steam it he did not like it at all and was trying to escaped so he had to kill it with his knife, not too cool to watch. The next day Sharpie and Anita were going to New Zealand and they were very nice  to lend us their apartment until we went to Sydney.

Nous avons rendu le camping car et pris une petite voiture pour aller jusqu’à l’appartement dans Brisbane, la capitale du Queensland. Nous avons rejoint David Sharp un autre ami de papa des bateaux, je l’appelais Sharpie. Il nous a amené sur son bateau le Liberty, j’étais super excité car on avait prévu d’aller pécher mais la mer était démontée  alors nous sommes restés du côté de la rivière, j’étais déçu. David a été super gentil et il m’a laissé conduire le bateau pendant 10min à pleine allure tout seul, c’était une super sensation. Au retour à son apart, il nous a présenté sa copine Anita et nous avons diné dans un resto sur la plage plateaux de fruits de mer au programme. David a continué de nous faire visiter la région de la Gold Coast, surtout les plages immenses sans personne dessus. Le soir nous avons fait les courses chez un poissonnier et pris des crevettes et un crabe Mud assez géant. David a fait un délicieux ceviche, j’ai aidé à préparé les légumes. David n’avait pas de fait tout assez grand pour faire cuire le crabe, il l’a mis dans une poêle mais il essayait de s’échapper quand c’est devenu trop chaud, alors il lui a mis un coup de couteau, assez dégoutant. Le jour suivant David et Anita sont allés assister à un mariage en Nouvelle Zélande et nous nous ont laissé l’utilisation de leur appartement, super sympa.

The next day we went to an aboriginal bushwalk. We had our guide that was an aborigine. She explained that the men and the women were very separate. The men would have their area that only they could be in and the women had their side. If the men would go into the women’s side they would have to have a small spear jabbed into there leg slightly, it would be pulled out immediately after being jabbed. The aborigine would have a time in the day called Dream Time. It was a very spiritual moment for them when they told stories of how their world came to be. One of them was a man called the Wonder, he was known for being able to train the dingoes to herd the kangaroos and animals to the Aborigine for them to catch. The Aborigine learned that kangaroos always follow one escape path they found it and that’s how they caught there kangaroos. When the Wonder died everybody was very sad but one day some boys were playing by the ocean and saw a dolphin swimming in an odd pattern and they saw that it was bring the fish towards them they went to get their fathers and they caught all the fish. They realized that it was the Wonder. The Aborigine sometimes believed that some would be reborn as animals. The Aborigine made boomerangs from curved tree roots. They only cut the boomerang out so it saved the tree. They made their shields from carving the outline of the shield then placing stones in the outline hitting tm them with a hammer and out comes your shield. There were Aboriginal laws that said that only the men can play the digeridoo and only the women can play a sort of drum. Our guide said that you put a big piece of possum skin on your lap and it’s a drum. I totally think that it was amazing to learn all these facts and see all these things.

Nous avons fait un Bush Walk, une marche dans la forêt avec un guide aborigène qui t’explique les coutumes de leur tribu. Elle nous a expliqué que les hommes et les femmes faisaient beaucoup de chose séparément. Certains endroits étaient réservés exclusivement aux femmes (comme là où elles accouchent), si un homme y va il sera puni(une lance dans le mollet). Ils ne connaissaient pas l’écriture, alors tous les jours les anciens se réunissaient avec les enfants pour leur raconter les Rêves. C’était un moment très spirituel, les enfants apprenaient comment le monde s’était formé, ça diffère selon les tribus. Ici, c’est un homme appelé le Magnifique, il a dompté les dingos qui ont ramené  des kangourous et d’autres animaux vers leur campement. Les aborigènes avaient compris que les animaux s’échappaient toujours vers le même chemin, alors ils ont pu attraper les animaux dont ils avaient besoin plus facilement. Le Magnifique mourut et tout le monde était très triste, un jour des enfants jouaient près de la plage et ont vu un dauphin avec un drôle de dessin sur son dos. En y regardant de plus près, le Magnifique s’était réincarné en dauphin et il ramenait les poissons vers leurs filets. Ils croient en la réincarnation, ils ne prennent que ce dont ils ont besoin pour manger jamais plus. Quand ils prennent un morceau de bois dans un arbre ils coupent que ce qu’ils utiliseront pour être sur que l’arbre ne meurt pas et se régénère, ex pour un boomerang ils choisiront une branche déjà courbée, ou pour un didgeridoo un arbre mangé par les termites, pareil pour leur bouclier (ils tracent un oval sur un tronc et avec des haches et des petits piques ils soulèvent l’écorce). Dans leurs lois, seul les hommes peuvent jouer du didgeridoo, les femmes font un tambour avec une peau d’opossum sur leurs genoux. J’ai beaucoup aimé cette balade, et j’ai appris plein de nouvelles choses sur leur culture.

We sadly left the fun city of Brisbane for Sydney. Our camper van  was the puniest one ever. We drove that first day to reach Nelson Bay, we arrived late and the camp was not great, but we were there just to sleep.

Nous avons quitté Brisbane et ses plages pour un voyage jusqu’à Sydney. Cette fois ci notre camping car est tout petit (il est pour 4 personnes quand même). Nous avons conduit toute la journée pour nous rapprocher de Nelson Bay, notre campement n’était pas super mais nous n’y restions pas juste pour dormir.

The day after that was nothing but fun on Nelson Bay about 3H north of Sydney. We first went dolphin watching. A ton of them came right up to the boat and swam under it, others were just swimming doing their thing. I really thought that it was amazing. But the fun was not finished, after we went quad riding which was the most awesome thing ever. Especially when I went fast and down the long steep dunes. At first it was super hard to control since it was my first time driving one. After a while I was going full throttle every time I could. We had to follow a guide so we couldn’t go as fast as we wanted or go free roaming which I would have gone crazy to do. I think that we couldn’t have gone at a better time because it was right at Sunset.
The day after that we finally made it to Sydney.

Nelson Bay a été une journée de fun complète au programme: croisière dans la baie pour voir les dauphins. Nous en avons vu beaucoup, ils venaient près du bateau et passé en dessous. J’ai adoré les voir comme ça autour de nous. Puis le summum de l’après midi: conduite de quad dans les dunes de sables du park national de Worimi. Au début c’était un peu difficile à manier comme je n’en avais jamais fait puis sur la fin j’allais à toute vitesse. Nous devions suivre un guide, donc nous ne pouvions pas aller au maximum mais nous avons descendu de grandes dunes. Nous étions là au moment du coucher du soleil, sur les dunes c’était un spectacle inoubliable. Le lendemain départ pour Sydney.

Our flight landed and we got our rental car. When we arrived at our place we immediately got settled in. After a while we decided to explore town, we saw the shipwreck museum, the jail. We were in Fremantle just south of Perth. While my mom and sister went back to the apartment , my dad and I explored some more and we found the most colorful parrots ever. There were at least a dozen of them, they weren’t in captivity, they are every where in Australia. The following day we went to a park called Caversham Wildlife Park. The first thing we did was go to see the koalas. I knew they slept 20 hours a day but I didn’t know they were such heavy sleepers. Their fur was a little bit rough, but they were super cute. One just looked like he was drunk. We were lucky enough to see a farm show. First they showed how they used dogs as herders for the sheep. Then the show host made my dad come up and crack a whip and he sheared a sheep in no time. In the end I got to milk a cow, it was really weird. After the show we moved on to the reptiles. They didn’t have that interesting of a display but it was for the native reptiles of Australia. They have a lot of animals that can kill you in this country. There was an enclave where they were showcasing Australian animals and you could touch a bunch of them, my favorite was the wombat. I never thought that they were so big and fat, also kind of ugly. I got to touch a Blue tongued skink, and a decent size snake. The thing that was weird about it was that most big snakes are muscly and squishy, but this one was soft and stretchy. Then we went to see the wallabies and kangaroos. On the way  there was the most colorful and magnificent bird I had ever seen, it was a male pheasant with very vibrant colors. It main color was bright red, had some blue feathers, an almost helmet like head and neck that was tiger patterned, and it had a little bit of green. I loved the fact that I could pet and feed the wallabies and kangaroos. They eat grass, so I could give them some grass pellets. A lot of the wallabies and kangaroos were white, a park ranger explained  that the original  white kangaroo was albino (white as snow with red eyes) and he mated with a lighter brown colored kangaroo. Feeding the kangaroos was my favorite part because they came up to you and stood up, some even were holding my hands.

Nous voilà arrivés en Australie! Après avoir récupéré la voiture de location, direction notre apart à Fremantle, une petite ville juste au sud de Perth. Nous avons exploré la ville, il y a pas mal d’histoire, le musée des bateaux qui ont fait naufrages, la prison un des premiers édifices à avoir été construits. Ma mère et ma soeur sont rentrées à notre apart et avec mon père nous avons joués aux échecs et au ping pong, les arbres étaient remplis de perroquets ou de cacatoès, ils sont partout ici, et ils faisaient un boucan d’enfer, ils étaient rouge et vert. Le jour suivant, nous sommes allés au parc de Caversham, pour voir les animaux d’Australie car ils en ont pas mal que nous ne connaissons pas. Nous nous sommes arrêtés chez les koalas. je savais qu’ils dormaient 20 h par jours, mais j’étais impressionné par le fait que certains n’arrivaient pas tenir leurs yeux ouverts, on aurait dit qu’ils étaient saouls! J’en ai caressé, leur fourrure n’était pas des plus douces. Ils mangent seulement des feuilles d’eucalyptus qui ne sont pas très calorique et ça ne leur donne pas d’énergie. Puis nous avons assisté au regroupement d’un troupeau de mouton avec des chiens bergers et à la tonte d’une brebis. Le fermier  nous a fait une démonstration  de fouet, il a demandé des volontaires, mon père s’est bien sûr levé, il est arrivé à le faire claquer du premier coup, le fermier a dit que ce n’était pas courant. Puis nous sommes allé dans un  endroit où il y avait seulement des animaux d’Australie, comme le cacatoès, certains perroquets, lézards à la langue bleue,le monstre de Tasmanie tacheté, le wombat (mon préféré, un peu comme une énorme peluche). Ensuite nous avons vu les wallabies et kangourous juste avant d’y arrivé j’ai vu un faisan mâle  il avait le plus beau plumage que j’ai jamais vu, les couleurs étaient tellement vibrantes. J’ai adoré le fait que je pouvais les caresser et leur donner à manger, ils mangent de l’herbe, on pouvait leur donner une sorte de granulés d’herbe séchée. Certains me donnaient la main.

The next day we visited the Pinnacles. As we got to the enormous desert the name Pinnacles became clear, thousands of pointy rocks coming out of the desert like tiger teeth. Some were big some were small. I climbed on a high rock and saw the entire site. The splendor of it was incredible. The orange desert sand with the tooth like rocks, with the marvelous snow white desert dunes in the distance. While walking across the desert we saw an Emu which was really amazing, right there in the wild. One desert to another we finished the pinnacles and went to the Lancelin Dunes. They were super nice except for the wind which blew the sand at you and they felt like pellets. The edges were super steep so I ran down one going down wasn’t fun and going back up was even worse you had the sand hitting you and a very high climb up. It was getting dark when we finished visiting the dunes and we settled in our hotel for the rest of the day.

Le jour suivant, nous avons exploré le Nord de Perth jusqu’au Pinnacles, c’est un parc national. C’est un désert, le temps et les éléments ont découpé les roches et maintenant elles ressemblent à des dents de tigres. Elles étaient de tailles différentes petites et grandes, j’en ai escaladé quelques unes, celles que l’on pouvait. La terre orange jaune était un joli contraste avec les pierres, nous avons aussi vu des dunes de sables d’un blanc très pur qui arrivaient jusqu’à la mer au loin. Pendant notre tour, nous avons vu un émeu qui se baladait, il était venu boire dans une flaque d’eau, c’est cool de voir ce genre d’animal dans la nature. Au retour nous nous sommes arrêtés aux dunes de Lancelin. Elles étaient blanches et très hautes, il y avait un vent  assez important et le sable me fouettait les jambes et le visage. Elles tombaient à pic comme une montagne, j’en ai descendue une en courant je n’ai pas bien aimé mais la montée était bien pire quand le sable et le vent étaient contre moi! Après cette journée bien remplie j’étais content de rentrer à l’hôtel.

The following day we took a long road trip to the South. Our first stop was at Bunbury Bay it was supposed to be a dolphin experience but we didn’t end up seeing any. On the bright side we got to see a bunch of other stuff. When we came right in we saw Port Jackson sharks, generally bottom dwellers. We also got to see a sting ray get fed. But my favorite was to see the octopi being fed. One of the 2 was trying to get out of its tank and it was splashing water everywhere and its tentacles getting out. I learned that star fish have eyes on the ends of their arms.

Ce coup ci nous sommes partis pour le sud, dans la région de Margaret River. Nous nous sommes arrêtés à Bunbury, il y avait un centre de découverte des dauphins. Comme il était tard vers 13h00, nous n’avons pas vu les dauphins, ils étaient venus le matin. Mais j’ai vu des requins Port Jacksons, et nous avons assisté au déjeuner d’une raie (elle mange des crevettes). J’ai bien aimé quand ils ont donné à manger à 2 pieuvres, ils nous ont expliqué qu’elles essayaient des sortir, elles éclaboussaient de partout, une des tentacules était sorti du bac ils ont eu toutes les peines du monde à la faire rerentrer. J’ai appris que les pieuvres avaient un cerveau dans chaque tentacule et que les étoiles de mer avaient des yeux au bout de leurs bras.

After long hours of driving we got to Margaret River. It is a wine region, we visited some wineries and breweries. For me they weren’t very interesting because I never got to taste wine, we did taste some chocolate and some nougat. One of the breweries had a fun playground, my Dad started spinning me and it felt like a rocket simulator.

Après un long trajet en voiture nous sommes arrivés à Margaret River. Nous sommes ici car c’est une région qui produit du vin, et mon père a dit que c’était son voyage aussi et il voulait vraiment le faire. Nous avons visité des vignobles et des brasseries. Je ne peux pas goûter le vin ou les bières donc ce n’est pas très amusant, mais nous avons visité une chocolaterie juste avant Pâques et une fabrication de nougat locale. Une des brasserie avait une super aire de jeu pour es enfants, alors je me suis régalé.

We went off to see some caves: Jewel caves. They were amazing stalagmites and stalactites hanging everywhere. Some of the formations were like Karri trees and jellyfish. Some were like water falls and coral. They were stunning. In one area of the cave there were some straws that had big bulbs on their tips. At one point our guide completely turned off every light in the cave and it was so dark you couldn’t see a thing not even your hand right in front of your face. When the lights were back, the cave looked even more amazing because of the quick transition of dark to light nothing to something amazing. We walked down the path and encountered a bush tail possum skeleton.

En continuant toujours plus au Sud, nous avons visité l’aven Jewel (Bijou), la région a beaucoup de grottes ou d’aven. Elle avait des stalagmites et stalactites, certains ressemblaient à un mur de corail, de méduses etc, j’ai beaucoup aimé. Certains étaient un petit filament avec comme une ampoule au bout. A un moment donné notre guide a tient les lumières et c’était noir de noir, je ne pouvais même pas voir ma main devant mes yeux! Quand elle a rallumé, la grotte paraissait encore plus spectaculaire du fait de la transition. Elle a pointé un squelette très vieux d’opossum, il a du tombé sans pouvoir ressortir.

It was time to drive back to Perth. On the way we stopped at the Cape Leuwinn to see the light house. When we got to the top our guide told us that it was the highest point in Western Australia. We stopped to admire the kari tree forest, huge trees that were used out as fire lookout. I was not feeling very well, I had some fever and a sore throat so I decided not to climb to the top. We arrived in Perth later and I rested. We had a long day until our flight to Cairns at 23.40, so to kill time we watched 2 movies Batman vs Superman, then my sister and I saw Zootopia while my mom and dad waited for our movie to finish. Once in the plane I lay down and slept for most of it, the next morning we were in Cairns on the north east coast of Australia.

Puis un stop au phare du Cap Leuwinn, c’est le phare le plus haut de l’ouest Australien. En route nous avons admiré la Vallée des géants, forêts de karris (variété d’eucalyptus), les arbres peuvent atteindre 70m. Mélia et mon père sont montés tout en haut d’un qui sert de tour de surveillance pour la prévention des feux de forêt. J’étais malade, une angine avec de la fièvre donc je me suis plus reposé. Comme notre avion pour Cairns (la côte est du pays) était tard le soir à 23h40 nous sommes allés au cinéma et j’ai vu le nouveau Batman vs Superman et Zootopia (mon préféré !). Un fois dans l’avion j’ai pu m’allonger et je me suis tout de suite endormi jusqu’à notre arrivée à Cairns.

The plane landed at a rather dinky looking airport terminal. I mean there was just a tiny building, and it was in the middle of rice fields. We got dropped off at Lenas house beach bungalows, made of bamboo and thatched roofed. The first thing we did was go snorkeling. it was cloudy that day so the visibility wasn’t great, but it was the first time I had seen clown fish in their natural habitat, they were living in a sebae anemone. After swimming we had to cross deep streams at high tide to go to the restaurant. There was a chess board for me and my dad, we had some awesome games. At night, we had to bring a flash light because the bungalows didn’t have electricity. The following day we went on a snorkeling trip. It was perfect except that sea lice stung me. Sea lice are microscopic sea creatures that feel like tiny jelly fish, not a nice sensation. The reefs were untouched, bright blue starfish, blue and green corals, sea shells, urchins with needles a foot long. I couldn’t compare it to any snorkeling I had ever seen. The fish weren’t very diverse but there was one fish that had a very long mouth, thin body, with a needle on the end of its tail. My sister had found this huge starfish with big black spikes on it. Our boat driver took us to different destinations with each one having a different thing. Just off the cost of Babi Island there was blue coral. In our first destination there were blue starfish, some had more urchins, anyway every spot had a different wonder. Everything was going perfectly except that it rained on the way back. It eventually passed and it turned into a normal day.

L’avion a attéri dans un petit aéroport, un tout petit hangar, prés de la mer et au milieu de rizières. Notre chauffeur nous a déposé à notre hôtel La Maison de Lena, c’était de petits bungalows de bambous avec vue sur la plage. Tout de suite, je me suis mis à l’eau pour faire du snorkeling avec ma mère et ma soeur. La visibilité n’était pas très bonne à cause du vent, mais j’étais très content d’avoir vue des poissons clowns comme Némo nager dans leurs anémones, c’était trop cool. Notre bungalow était à 600m du restaurant et pour y arriver il fallait marcher sur la plage mais à marée haute on avait de l’eau jusqu’aux fesses et le soir il n’y avait pas de lumière donc on rentrait avec une lampe de poche, ça faisait parti de l’aventure. J’aimais bien qu’au resto il y avait un jeu d’échec, j’ai fait quelques parties contre mon père et je suis arrivé à le battre. Le lendemain,  on a loué un bateau et il nous emmenait dans 3 endroits différents pour faire du snorkeling. Je me suis fait piquer par des poux de mer en fait des méduses microscopiques, pas une sensation super agréable mais ça passe vite. Le corail était spectaculaire, il y en avait de partout et l’eau aussi claire qu’une piscine. Il y avait beaucoup d’étoiles de mer bleues, ma soeur en a trouvé des oranges avec des pics noirs, des oursins avec des aiguilles super longues. Je n’avais rien vue de pareil. Il n’y avait pas de gros poissons mais pas mal de petits. J’ai vu un poisson très fin avec une longue bouche et comme une épine dans la queue. Les 3 endroits où on s’est arrêté avec tous quelques choses de différents et j’ai bien aimé. Sur le retour il s’est mis à pleuvoir, et j’avais un peu froid car j’étais mouillé. Finalement, la pluie s’est arrêté et la journée s’est terminé normalement.

After an amazing day of snorkeling came moving to Labuan Bajo (a different part of Flores). Since it takes 5 days by car we thought it would be wise not to take a plane. On the way we would stop at volcanos, markets and villages. The first market that we saw was the local market. Almost all the elderly were chewing beetle nut. When you chew beetle nut your mouth becomes red, it’s like there’s blood all over their mouth. Most people sold vegetables,  christophine’s and yams. There was one guy making popcorn, he had to hand spin a little cauldron. The kernels were in the center and flames were on the outside heating the kernels. At one point the kernels get so hot the kernels explode into popcorn but with it the machine also exploded. There was a big stand that was selling entire dried up fish. There was an entire dried tuna, which ruined tuna for me, the smell was quite something.

Nous voilà sur le départ en direction de Labuan Bajo vers l’est de l’île de Flores. Ca va nous prendre 5 jours, on va le faire en voiture pour explorer les différentes parties comme les volcans ou les villages traditionnels. Premier stop un marché très typique, les anciens mâchaient des noix de bétel, en mâchant ça les fait saliver et ça colore leur salive en rouge et ils ont les dents toutes oranges ou rouges (et surtout toutes pourries ils ne connaissent pas les dentistes vers là-bas). Les gens vendaient des fruits et légumes par terre comme des christophines ou des yams. Un mec faisait du pop corn dans une machine en fonte qu’il tournait à la main sous un feu. Quand le pop corn a éclaté ça a fait pété la machine avec un gros bruit. Il y avait aussi un stand qui vendait du poisson séché, un thon entier sec, il fallait être présent pour se rendre compte de l’odeur!

The first volcano we saw was Kelimutu. We woke up at 4:00 in the morning to see the sunrise. The sunrise was cool to watch it had different bands of colors. Orange to yellow then a little bit of green, and finally blue. The volcano had three craters, each had a lake in them almost as if the craters got flooded with water. One crater lake was deep green and the other was a bright aqua. They changed color depending on the richness of Sulfur they had. The last was covered in fog. After the sunrise passed the colors of the lakes were much more vivid. When we were just about ready to leave there was an Indonesian T.V crew that interviewed us we had to say what we though of Kelimutu. After breakfast we headed back on the road to Bajawa. In one area the road was blocked for a few hours because the road was being expanded. Unfortunately there weren’t as many diggers on the bottom then on the top. in Bajawa, my parents went to different hotels before settling to the Happy Happy.

Notre premier volcan était le Kelimutu à Moni. Nous nous sommes levé à 4.00 pour voir le lever du soleil. C’était un moment assez spécial, il y avait des couleurs en bandes, orange et jaune…Ce volcan a 3 cratères qui se sont formés lors de différentes éruptions, et chacun a un lac de couleur différente. Un était de couleur vert foncé, un autre plus vert d’eau et le troisième avait du brouillard. La couleur change en fonction de la quantité de souffre qu’ils contiennent. Un fois le soleil plus haut dans le ciel les couleurs des lacs étaient plus prononcées. Nous étions près à partir quand une équipe de la TV nationale indonésienne nous a fait une petite interview, il fallait que l’on dise ce que l’on pensait du volcan. Après un petit déj bien mérité de retour à l’hôtel nous sommes repartis vers la ville de Bajawa. A un moment donné nous sommes restés bloqués pendant au moins un heure à cause d’un éboulement, ça arrive souvent pendant la saison des pluies. Mes parents ont visités plusieurs hôtels avant de choisir le Happy Happy, ils ont bien fait il était pas mal du tout.

Next day we visited a traditional village the Bena Village. Which was by far the best village we saw on the entire drive to Labuan Bajo. The houses had with shingled roofs made out of bamboos. We bought some nuts from this old guy chewing beetle nut, he said he was selling macadamia nuts but they were candle nuts which are toxic and gives you severe stomach problems. I was the only one that didn’t eat them so I was fine, but the rest of the family they were throwing up all night. Some of the grandmas that smiled at us had teeth so bad from beetle nut they had barely any teeth, and the ones that were there were black. We didn’t stop at many other places except for the spider web rice terraces in Cancar. They were spectacular and unlike anything I had ever seen. Kilometers of spider web like rice terraces. Perfectly stunning. Hours after hours passed until Labuan Bajo was in sight.

Le jour suivant nous avons visité le village traditionnel de Bena. A mon avis le plus beau village de tout notre périple sur cette île. Les maisons en bois et bambous, pour les décorés ils mettent les têtes des animaux qu’ils tuent. Nous avons acheté des noix de macadamias qu’un vieux monsieur nous a vendu, le problème de macadamia est que ce n’était pas des noix  de macadamia mais des noix de bougie. Elles sont toxiques mangés crues, tous ont eu la diarrhée et vomi sauf moi car je n’en ai pas mangé. Il fallait avancé mais nous nous sommes quand même arrêté pour voir les rizières de Cancar. Elles sont en forme de toile d’araignée, c’était magnifique à voir, elles s’étendaient à perte de vue. Finalement après des heures et des heures Labuan Bajo était en vue!

Days in a car had paid off the trip to Labuan Bajo was ending. I was incredibly disappointed with the town, being the most touristy place on the Island I thought it would be more than a trash hole. It was filthy, abandoned shacks everywhere I was seriously disappointed. After our first night in Labuan Bajo, the thing I wanted to see the most on the entire trip was happening the Komodo Island.

La ville de Labuan Bajo ne restera pas gravée dans ma mémoire, soit disant la ville la plus touristique de l’île n’offrait pas un spectacle pour les yeux. Elle était très sale, des poubelles de partout surtout du plastic, les rues pas finies. Notre hôtel était quand même bien le Golo Hilltop. Je touchais enfin à mon but voir les dragons de Komodo.

We were assisted with a park ranger to make sure we would be safe. After a few minutes of walking we saw a group of 12 komodo dragons. That was my first glimpse of a komodo dragon in the wild. I have to admit I was feeling like I was in a dream. Watching the big hulking lizards move in their sort of waddling way. My Dad asked how can you tell a female from a male, our ranger said that the females have smaller bodies and their tail is rounder. The biggest dragon in the bunch was painted red on it back.The ranger explained this Komodo dragon had attacked someone before. I asked what would happen if someone got bitten by a komodo dragon he said that the dragons have a huge amount of bacteria in their mouth so if the victim doesn’t get to the hospital in time the bacteria would digest the flesh around the bite and you have to amputate. He started walking and hissing at us but settled down. We were walking down the trail when a female dragon joined us in the middle of the path. It got startled wanted to walk away but we kept following it. It was just when it curved off into the forest that we saw its nest. The ranger told us that one female can lay 15 to 30 eggs. He also said that only one of the multiple holes was the real one, this was done to make it harder for monkeys, other dragons, and other animals to steal the eggs. Baby Komodo’s have to run away when they are born because if the mom is hungry she will eat the baby’s. We saw a lot of baby dragon’s on the trail.  For a long time we didn’t see much except monkeys and a lot of buffalo poop with dung beetle’s in it. At the end of our visit of Komodo I was really sad to leave but incredibly happy to have had a dream fulfilled.

Nous étions accompagné par un ranger pour être sur que l’on rentre entier. Après seulement quelques minutes nous avons vu un groupe de 12 dragons de bonne taille. J’étais impressionné de les voir dans leur habitat naturel, j’étais aux anges, complètement fasciné. Mon père demanda au ranger pourquoi l’un d’entre eux était peint en rouge sur le dos, il nous expliqua parce qu’il avait attaqué des humains et comme ça ils pouvaient le repérer plus rapidement et le surveiller de plus près. Les guides n’ont qu’un petit baton pour nous protéger! je lui ai demandé que se passerait-il s’il me mordait? Les femelles sont plus petites que les males, elles peuvent pondre entre 15 et 30 oeufs. Elles creusent plusieurs trous pour protéger leurs oeufs des prédateurs singes, autres komodos…Quand ils naissent les enfants doivent se sauver car leur mère ou autre adulte les mangeraient. Nous avons eu la chance de voir pas mal de bébé pendant notre trek dans la jungle. Nous avons vu des singes mias seulement les cacas des buffles d’eau! J’étais triste de partir mais super content que nous en ayons vu autant. Je me suis coupé ‘orteil sur une pierre, le ranger m’a mis une feuille pour arrêter le sang car les komodos sentent le sang sur plusieurs km. Heureusement c’était pas profond.

Voici certains faits sur les dragons de Komodo: Ils n’existent qu’ici au monde, ils ont des dents qui s’accrochent à leurs proies et leurs déchirent la peau, en même temps ils déposent des bactéries qui sont anticoagulantes (ainsi la proie se vide de son sang et ils n’ont pas à la poursuivre sur des kilomètres ils attendent qu’elles tombent un peu comme des charogniers), ils sont très agressifs naturellement ou pour protéger leurs oeufs. Sur l’île ils n’ont pas d’antidote et l’hôpital le plus près est à 1h30 de bateau. Pas vraiment pratique si on se fait attaquer. Ils mangent des buffles d’eau, des cerfs ou des dragons plus petits.

After dragons came snorkeling like no other on planet earth it was in Kanawa Island. As we walked through the scorching sun to get to our boat I took my farewells to the trash hole of Labuan Bajo, and said my greetings to Kanawa. My first impressions weren’t so good because the beach was full of trash and the bungalows were super run down and ugly. But the snorkeling was like nothing I had ever seen. The  first day we only ran into coral and fish that weren’t very colorful. But on the second we learned that it was near the end of the beach that had the best fish. Just of the beach I saw this big yellow thing sticking out of a box and I realized that it was a moray eel. If it wasn’t for me we wouldn’t have seen the eels. Another on was in a hole in some coral, my dad wanted to poke them out but I didn’t thing that would be a good idea. The thing I was most looking forward to seeing on Kanawa were sea turtles we were swimming for a long time until Melia saw a decent sized hawks bill turtle. After finishing my swim I was sitting on the boat dock drying in the sun. I was kind of bored until I started talking to other kids on the Island Alif and Mark. Talking turned into jumping from the boat dock with them, which turned into wrestling. Then soccer, after the game we went swimming. Mark and I started jumping into shallow water which kind of hurt me because it wasn’t deep enough. When I was one the beach I saw a thing that was white with black stipes I thought it was trash and picked it up until it started moving and I realized it was a poisonous sea snake, I knew that if I moved the snake would possibly bite me, and help is a while away. We went on a walk on the beach for sunset, we were on a little dock I spotted a monstrous puffer fish. He was massive at least 2 and a half feet long. I poked it with a stick to see if it would puff up but it had no effect. While we were looking at him we also saw a sting ray with blue spots. At night it was hard to sleep with the sound of mosquitos trying to get through the mosquito net and it was really hot. The geckos were also chirping and going gecko gecko gecko. After having lots of amazing experiences with the ocean it was back to Labuan Bajo, and off to Bali.    

Le jour d’après nous sommes allés sur l’île de Kanawa, un petit trésor pour faire du snorkeling. Premiers impressions pas génial, du plastic un peu partout  sur la plage et les bungalows avaient besoin d’une bonne renovation! Mais à côté le snorkeling était superbe, je n’avais rien vu de pareil. Tout de suite après être arrivé nous sommes allés dans l’eau, nous avons surtout vu du corail. Le jour suivant par contre nous avons été gâtés! Il fallait s’écarter de la plage. En nageant, j’ai remarqué un truc orange qui bougeait dans une boite en métal, en regardant de plus près je n’en revenais pas c’était une murène orange, elle était  plutôt grosse. Peu être 2 minutes plus tard j’en ai vu une autre dans un trou de corail, elles ouvrent leur bouche en grand pour respirer et c’était assez impressionnant, je n’aurai pas voulu qu’elle me morde! Mon père voulait essayer de les toucher avec le Go Pro mais je me suis dit que ce n’était pas une bonne idée. Heureusement il ne l’a pas fait. Je voulais absolument voir une tortue ici, et quand Mélia a crié Tortue! Nous nous sommes dépéchés de la rejoindre, et nous avons vu la tortue, nous l’avons suivi un peu puis elle est allée trop vite pour nous. Je me suis mis au soleil pour séché et il y avait 2 garçons Alif (12) et Mark(8), nous avons commencé à parler puis à jouer, d’abord en sautant du dock dans la mer, puis bataille dans l’eau, petit match de foot sur la plage, puis bataille avec bâtons avec Mark. Je me suis bien amusé c’était sympa de jouer avec d’autres enfants. A un moment donné pendant que je jouais dans l’eau avec Mark, j’ai vu une chose dans l’eau et j’ai cru que c’était un déchet j’allais l’attraper quand j’ai réalisé que c’était un serpent vénéneux noir et blanc, il est passé sur mon bras seulement. Le soir nous nous sommes promenés sur la plage pour admirer le coucher du soleil. Nous avons vu un super gros poisson puffer (ceux qui gonflent quand ils se sentent en danger) je l’ai touché avec un bâton pour voir s’il allait gonfler mais ça n’a pas marchait. Nous avons aussi vu une raie avec des pois bleus et des petits requins de récifs pas dangereux mais ils allaient trop vite pour les prendre en photos, nous avons aussi vu des poissons lions ils ont du venin au bout de leur pics. Par contre les bungalows n’étaient pas super et il était difficile de dormir car il faisait trop chaud sans ventilo et autre et c’était plein de moustiques! Même si on avait des gecko de partout, il n’arrivaient pas à manger tous les moustiques. Notre voyage sur Flores s’achève et nous repartons sur Bali.
