The bus to Penang was long and boring as usual. We crossed a huge bridge to get to the island, about 1 mile long. At first I thought that Penang was a city, and that it was pronounced Penne, like the Italian pasta. Well, the hotel we were staying in was in a town (George Town) at least. And what a difference! The Cameron highlands and George Town had nothing in common, the Cameron Highlands was poor, with no good looking hotels or restaurants, and George Town had Indochina architecture and tons of cafes and restaurants. And our hotel was really nice! What was special about George Town was that there was a mix of 3 cultures, Chinese, Indian, and Malaysian, and each had its own little quarters in the town.

Le bus qui nous a amené à Penang, était long et ennuyant comme tous les autres. Nous avons traversé un pont immense qui relie le continent à l’île de Penang (quand mes parents sont venus il y a 19 ans le pont n’existait pas). Au début je pensais que Penang était une ville et que ça s’écrivait Penne, comme les pâtes italiennes!!! En fait c’est le nom de l’île et la ville où nous étions été Georgetown. Rien à voir avec les collines de Cameron mais rien du tout. Les Camerons étaient pauvres, il faisait frais, Penang super humide et chaud et à la fois moderne et ancienne avec son architecture enregistrée au patrimoine de l’Unesco. Il y avait beaucoup de petits cafés et une architecture coloniale. Notre hôtel le Chulia Mansion était super, moderne et au coeur de tout.  C’est la parfaite représentation de la Malaisie ici, avec les Malais, les Hindous et les Chinois chacun a son propre quartier avec ses traditions.

For lunch that first day we ate at a Chinese food place that served only chicken and rice. We had a delicious chicken with a thick sweet and savory sauce and drinks for all 4 of us for only 9 dollars. Wow right? After lunch we walked all around town. We went to see street which wasn’t graffiti, but more like paintings on building walls. There were pictures of Malaysian kids on a bicycle, a cat, a guy on a scooter, children waving out a window and many more. These I found beautiful, because they were more than just graffiti they portrayed their name correctly, street art. We also visited an ancient Chinese fishing village. All of the houses were on stilts and were made out of wood, now weathered and brittle from the many centuries that they had stood. Upon arrival a smell hit my nose, the smell of dry algae and ocean. When I looked over a dock, I cringed. There wasn’t much water, only gray brown sludge and muck. And I saw a man in it, he appeared to be looking for his lost rope. He was in thy deep in that stuff, but finally he found his rope and made his way out. Away from that dock and at the very end of the tiny village, I could see the entire harbor, and the big cargo ships out at sea waiting to come to port.

Pour le lunch nous avons mangé dans un restaurant chinois leur spécialité était le poulet roti ou bouilli nous avons choisi roti et on s’est regalé et c’était pas cher atour de 9$ pour nous 4. Penang est connue pour ses artistes, il y a beaucoup de murals mais aussi certains en 3 D (vous verrez avec les photos), c’était super cool. Car tu peux te mettre dans le tableau, c’est beaucoup mieux que des graffitis. Nous avons aussi visité un ancien village de pêcheurs chinois avec leurs maisons sur pilotis qui datent de longtemps. Par contre nous étions à marée basse et il n’y avait pas trop d’eau mais beaucoup de vases ça ne sentait pas très bon. Il y avait un homme qui essayait de trouver la ligne de son bateau dans cette boue, je n’aurais pas aimé être à sa place. Au bout du dock on avait une belle vue d’ensemble et je voyais les gros bateaux au large arrivant. 

We stopped in Little India. All the colors, all the flowers, all the saris, I was a little overwhelmed! And the noise! Each shop was blasting Indian music, and a different song was playing at each one so you didn’t know what you were listening to exactly. We ate Indian food that night. It was very good but it did take a long time to bring a curry which already prepared and a few naans. But my favorite thing I had was the dessert, the restaurant called it a roti bomb. It’s kind of hard to explain what it tasted like because you probably have never eaten a roti before but all I need to tell you is that it was probably the most delicious thing I have ever eaten! It was so good I went back to that restaurant just to order that.

Nous avons visité La Petite Inde “Little India”, c’était très coloré les saris des femmes, les fleurs pour les offrandes , les odeurs des épices, et la musique indienne à fond la caisse dans les rues! Ce soir là nous avons mangé indien, c’était bon mais nous avons du attendre longtemps pour certains plats. J’ai adoré le dessert Roti Bomb, une crêpe roti avec du lait sucré condensé, trop bon. C’est dur d’expliquer le goût car si vous n’avez jamais mangé une roti ce n’est pas facile mais vous pouvez me faire confiance quand je vous dis que c’était super bon.

We also went to visit an ancient Chinese house. This was really one of a kind because during the Maoist Revolution, almost all of the houses were destroyed. I loved the architecture with the little courtyard in the middle and the open rooms around that. All of the wood work, the paintings, the jewelry! The man who built this house came from China and had four wives. He made his money on a tin mine in Penang and black money (opium, alcohol, and gambling). For a while his family was the wealthiest in all of Penang. But the money was all gone by the third generation of descendants.

Nous avons aussi visité Peranakan Mansion, une maison chinoise de riche marchand toute refaite datant du 19ème siècle.  Elles sont rares car durant la révolution chinoise toutes ses maisons en Chine ont été détruites. J’ai bien aimé le bois et la petite cour intérieure d’où partent toutes les pièces. Les riches Chinois étaient appelés Babas pour les hommes et les Nyonyas pour les femmes.Le propriétaire est venu de Chine, il avait 4 femmes, il a fait son argent grâce à une mine d’étain et de l’argent sale (opium, mafia, alcohol et les jeux). Pendant un temps il était l’homme le plus riche de Penang mais après 3 générations l’argent s’évapora.

We also went to the beach. The water was warm but it was pretty cloudy so it wasn’t great for snorkeling. I think that that water was the nicest ocean water I ever swam in. In all of the other places I’ve gone to I couldn’t stay in the water for more than 15 minutes without freezing my butt off. I spent 3hr and 20 min swimming and surfing in the waves. When we got back to the hotel, the only thing I wanted was that free ice cream and a nap. For the rest of the day I stayed in my room and did some homework.

Nous sommes aussi allés à la plage. L’eau était chaude mais il y avait beaucoup de vagues donc elle était pas claire, on ne pouvait pas voir dedans. J’ai passé 3 H à m’amuser dans les vagues, j’aimerai que l’eau soit à chaque fois aussi bonne! Quand nous sommes rentrés j’avais seulement assez de force pour aller manger ma glace et me reposer. J’ai quand même fait des devoirs…

The largest Buddhist temple in all of South-East Asia was in Penang. I could see it from a long distance away, it was pretty hard to miss. It was more of a complex than one big temple. We first visited a big open room where our voices were amplified to 60 decibels louder than usual. Then we went to a pagoda. People gathered to listen to the monks do their prayers. The air was thick with incent smoke and sweaty people. Wishing ribbons were constantly being strung up. (The people of Malaysia believe in luck and wishes, as do the Thais and the Chinese). Outside the pagoda was a small pond where turtles big and small clambered over each other in a desperate attempt to reach the food people threw at them. Next to the turtles was a tram that took us to the very top of the temple, where the goddess of mercy loomed 100 feet over everyone else. She even had her own big structure to protect her from the elements. That was basically the end of the temple visit.

Le plus grand temple Bouddhiste en Asie du Sud Est se trouve sur Penang. Je pouvais voir Kek Lok Si de très loin car il se situe sur une colline. En fait, il y avait plein d’édifices différents comme une pagode et d’autres bâtiments avec des statues et beaucoup d’encens. Nous avons accroché des rubans pour avoir de la chance (on fait une donation et on choisit le ruban qu’on veut ex santé, richesse, école). Il y avait des tortues dans une mare, beaucoup elles se montaient dessus pour avoir à manger. Nous avons pris un funiculaire pour monter à la statue de la Déesse Mercy. 

Ok, I loved Malaysia. I loved the diversity in all of the 3 places we visited and I loved the people. Kuala Lumpur was a huge metropolis, clean and buzzing with activity, Cameron Highlands with their beautiful views, and finally Penang, with architecture, temples, and beaches.

Ok, j’ai adoré la Malaisie. J’ai bien aimé la diversité des gens du pays car ils apportent tous quelque chose d’unique. Kuala Lumpur était cette ville moderne et géante mais propre et en mouvement, les Collines de Cameron avaient quelque chose de magique et finalement Penang  avec son architecture, se temples et ses plages. 

We left Kuala Lumpur which was the capital city of Malaysia, to go to the Cameron Highlands. The town when we got there looked more like a village in Quebec or England than a town in Malaysia. And it looked pretty run down with dirty old buildings, not a restaurant in view. And our hotel was, lets just say that it was not the Aloft. For lunch, since we could find no decent restaurant or any street vendor, we ate at the KFC parallel to the hotel. In the afternoon, my mom and I went for a stroll. On the outskirts of town, we saw some little tents but we weren’t sure wether people lived there or if it was some sort of market. Then up this hill we saw some other small little homes with small children running around wearing old, dirty clothing. This was an impoverished town. That’s when I realized what tourism does for a place. Before I was always complaining that there were too many tourists in every place that we’ve gone to, but now I know that tourism brings income, so that the town or park looks better. That night, we ate at an Chinese restaurant next to our hotel. It was not adequately clean and the food was not good, we didn’t even know what we were eating half the time. By that point, I was disappointed with the town and wished that I was still in Kuala Lumpur where the food was delicious and we had wifi.

Nous avons quittés Kuala Lumpur la capitale de la Malaisie pour les Cameron Highland. C’est en montagne, les routes étaient un peu tournantes, quand nous sommes arrivés la petite ville ressemblait plus au Québec ou à une ville en Angleterre maisons style Tudor (colombages) assez mal fait. Pour tout dire, je vais regretter notre hôtel de KL car la ville n’est pas très propre et les constructions ne sont pas très bien maintenues! Notre hôtel est OK, propre mais c’est tout, le Wifi ne marche pas bien du tout, pour le lunch on est allé au KFC car tous les autres resto étaient fermés c’était 15h c’est pour dire le grand choix que nous avions! Après j’ai fait une balade avec ma mère, aux abords de la ville il y avait des tentes je ne sais pas si des gens vivaient dedans ou si c’était un marché, mais j’ai pu remarqué que c’est plus pauvre ici. Parfois je me plains des touristes, mais j’ai compris que s’il y a plus de touristes les locaux ont plus de revenu et sont plus riches donc la ville se développe et tout le monde en bénéficie. Nous sommes allés à un resto chinois pour le dinner manger une fondue chinoise, le resto était crade, la nappe toute dégeulasse, la nourriture n’était pas très bonne ils ont raté la cuisson d leur riz pour dire! Et il y avait des choses on ne savait pas ce que c’était. Comme je regrette KL avec sa bonne nourriture et la wifi qui marchait!

The next day was the day for visiting. By taxi, we went to go see the tea plantations and strawberries that the Cameron Highlands are so famous for. The mountains were bright green and covered in patterns. I took some tea leaves in my hand and crushed them. They didn’t smell anything like tea but I guess that the scented flavor come with fermentation. Then we went to a place where they fabricate the tea. We got to see the process where first the tea leaves are torn apart to let the water out. Then they are mushed and fermented and that’s when they lose their green color and turn brown. Next they get sifted to rid them of any stems and fibers. And finally they are sorted according to quality. My mom bought some brewed tea with scones. Those were so good with strawberry jam and clotted cream, yum. After the tea and scones.

Le lendemain, nous avons pris un taxi et il nous a fait visiter les environs. Premier stop une plantation de thé, les collines de Cameron sont réputées pour leur climat permettant la production de fraises aussi et de légumes. Les collines étaient d’un vert pétant, recouvertes de petits bushes. J’ai écrasé des  feuilles de thé dans mes mains, en fait ça ne sentait pas comme le thé sec. Nous avons visité la plantation Boh et j’ai vu comment ils faisaient. En fait il y a 5 étapes dans le processus ramassage (et lavage), puis les feuilles roulent sur de grandes machines, ensuite c’est l’étape de la fermentation, puis du séchage et enfin le triage (très bon à moins de goût).

We were taken to go see some flowers like lavender and daisies. These kinds of flowers may seem normal to you, but to the Malaysians they are very rare for they can only grow in the cooler Cameron Highlands and not the rest of tropical Malaysia. They weren’t that impressive, I preferred the butterfly place we went to next. There were butterflies as big as my hand and brightly colored and moths that looked like dead leaves. A guide showed us around the museum. The plants he showed us were as spectacular as the butterflies. There were hibiscus flowers as large as my face, and a plant that looked like it had blue chili peppers hanging off it. He let us hold bugs like giant stick insects and spiky grasshoppers, those dead leaf moths, and even a scorpion! My favorite animal I held though was a whip snake. Our guide twisted it up around my neck like a tie, and the snake was fine with that. That and the tea plantations were my favorite thing we did that day. For dinner we took a cab to the town next door and had a delicious meal. At 8 am the next morning we hopped onto a bus and left for the island of Penang.

Après notre chauffeur nous a amené voir des pépinières de fleurs avec des gerbera, et des lavandes. Ce ne sont pas des fleurs de leur pays naturellement donc pour les Malaysiens  c’est spécial et seulement dans les hauteurs où le climat est plus clément. Pour moi ce n’était pas vraiment nouveau, et j’ai préféré notre arrêt à la ferme aux papillons. Il y avait des papillons aussi grand que ma main avec de magnifiques couleurs, et des mites qui ressemblaient à des feuilles mortes. Le guide nous a fait la visite et nous a montré des choses que je n’avais jamais vu, comme cette plante bleue! Les fleurs d’hibiscus étaient aussi larges que mon visage. Mais le plus fun c’est quand il nous a mis divers insects ou autres animaux sur nous! Comme un serpent, un scorpion, j’avoue que j’avais un peu peur. J’ai adoré cet endroit de même que la plantation de thé. Pour diner nous avons pris un taxi pour la ville voisine et enfin nous avons mangé de la bonne nourriture. Le lendemain matin 8h bus pour Penang.  

Ok, change of plan people! After leaving Siam Reap, we went back to Bangkok. But instead of going to the south of Thailand like on our schedule because the prices of hotels were like 5,000 $ per night, we decided to go to Malaysia. Our first stop was Kuala Lumpur. I know, you’ve probably never heard of it, but it was actually an awesome city! Our flight from Bangkok to there was uneventful, though I noticed upon arrival all of the fields of palm trees. Malaysia is a major producer of palm oil, and like in Indonesia, deforestation is a huge problem. There wasn’t a huge line at customs like there was in Thailand, we only had to wait 20 minutes. Then we took an express train to our hotel.

Changement de plan! Après avoir quitter Siem Reap direction Bangkok pour le Sud de la Thaïlande, mais c’est le nouvel an et les prix sont exorbitants et presque pas de place! Donc mes parents decident d’aller en Malaysie, hey nouveau pays! Nous arrivons à Kuala Lumpur la capitale après un vol sans encombre.J’ai quand même noté qu’il avait pas mal de plantations de palmiers pour l’huile de palme. J’espère qu’il n’y a pas trop de déforestation comme en Indonésie. Presque pas d’attente à l’immigration, puis train express pour arriver en ville.

That was one of the nicest hotels I have ever been to! The Aloft hotel was giant! And our room was big and had a bathroom better than anything we’ve used in Southeast Asia. It had an infinity pool on the topmost floor that looked over the entire city. But best of all, the Wi-Fi there was really fast. That hotel was connected to a shopping mall. It wasn’t one of those little malls with a theatre and a couple stores that revolve around that, no, this one had 7 floors, and shops on each one except the top floor which had food courts. Our first day was exploring the mall and chilling.

Notre hôtel Aloft était un des meilleurs hôtels où nous avons séjourné moderne, super propre, wifi était rapide, notre TV avait des chaines que l’on comprenait. La piscine était au dernier étage avec vue sur le quartier. Cet hôtel était connecté à la gare et à un shopping mall. Pas un petit mais un avec 7 étages! Nous avons passé l’après midi à explorer notre quartier.

The second day we visited the Petronas towers. Those are the 7th tallest towers in the world at 452meters. We went to buy the tickets, but since the line was long, my mom, Jayden and I decided to explore the mall on the first 8 floors of the towers. This was a more high-end mall, with stores like Gucci, Rolex, Apple, expensive things like that. On the top floor, there was a food court like in our mall, but this one was much bigger, it took up the entire 8th floor whereas in our mall, there was this small section of food court and the rest was more shopping. We met up with my dad who gave us the good news that we got the last 4 tickets of the day! It was about noon by then so we went upstairs and had some lunch. I’ve forgotten to tell you but the food in Kuala Lumpur was delicious. It was diverse in the sense that you could eat any food from any country you wanted. I personally liked their Japanese food. Then lunch passed and we explored the mall and city like China Town until finally, the time of our visit had come near. Before going up, we went outside to watch a fountain with a light show going on. A few minutes of fountain fun, we made our way up through the tower, we stopped on floor 41 to visit the sky walk. It was meh, not that impressive, so we went all the way up to the 81st floor. The view from up there wasn’t as amazing as I thought it would be. The windows (although there were many) were dirty which made it hard to see and especially hard to take a picture. And I was hoping that we would be towering above the city, it turned out that we were 60 meters above the skyline. I was kind of annoyed at that because we payed 60 dollars to go up there and it wasn’t all that impressive. To add to that, Jayden, who had eaten a bad hot dog for dinner felt sick to his stomach. Luckily my mom asked for a plastic bag because he got sick soon after we had descended. Back at the hotel, he lay in bed and didnt get up. The next day he still didn’t want to move around so we just stuck to the pool on the top floor. For dinner my parents and I had dinner at our mall without Jayden. Time to leave Kuala Lumpur! It was not until we had left that I would come to really miss it…

Le deuxième jour nous avons visité les Tours Petronas, elles sont les 7ème plus hautes tours du monde 452m. Nous sommes allés acheter les tickets mais comme il y avait une longue queue, mon frère, ma mère et moi nous nous sommes baladés dans le mall des tours. C’était un mall super chic avec des magasins comme Gucci, Chanel etc alors nous n’avons fait que regarder! Il faisait 8 étages avec un coin resto rapide au 8ème étage et au 1er. Notre père nous a retrouvé et il nous a dit qu’il avait eu les 4 derniers tickets du jours! donc nous allions pouvoir voir les tours mais de nuit il faudra revenir à 20.30. Nous avons eu de la chance sinon il fallait refaire la queue le lendemain…  Nous   avons manger, j’ai oublié de vous dire que la nourriture ici est très bonne et assez diverse. On peut manger Japonais, Malais, Indien, chinois etc. Nous avons passé le temps l’après midi à visiter China Town qui est une communauté importante de la Malaisie  comme les Indiens d’Inde. Puis le moment est arrivé de notre visite comme nous avions encore un peu de temps, nous avons regardé  le spectacle des fontaines c’était comme un ballet sur l’eau avec la musique et l’eau qui dansait et changeait de couleur avec le rythme des chansons. Nous nous sommes arrêtés au 41 ème étage pour marcher le sky walk, pont de verre entre les deux tours. Puis retour dans l’ascenseur jusqu’au 81 ème étage, le vue d’ici était bien plus impressionnante mais je pensais que ce serais encore plus grandiose, les vitres n’étaient pas très propres donc c’était difficile de prendre des photos et je pensais que nous étions bien bien au dessus de tout.  J’ai trouvé que payer 60$ pour cette vue était trop cher. En plus Jayden a du manger un mauvais hot dog, il ne se sentait pas bien en haut de la tour, heureusement ma mère a demandé un sac plastic et juste en bas de l’ascenseur il a vomi dans le sac! Le lendemain il ne se sentait toujours pas bien alors il est resté dans la chambre nous avons profité de la piscine au dernier étage de l’hôtel. Et pour dinner nous avons mangé au mall attenant à notre hôtel. Puis départ pour les Cameron Highlands.

The people of Cambodia are the nicest, most welcoming people I have ever met. They’re all smiles though a little shy sometimes. But the sad thing is, they have suffered a great deal. A horrific and tragic era of Cambodian history began in 1975 in the reign of the Khmer rouge. They were led by Pol Pot. A few days after the Khmer Rouge took power, they forced about 2 million people in Cambodia’s capital city Phnom Penh and other cities into the countryside to undertake agricultural work. This was done at gunpoint. Thousands of them died during these evacuations.

Les Cambodgiens sont tellement gentils, toujours souriants et aimables. Mais c’est un peuple qui a énormément souffert. En 1975 Pol Pot arriva au pouvoir et alors commença pour eux des décennies d’horreur avec les Khmers Rouges. Ils ont exilé de force avec les armes 2 millions de personnes des différentes villes du pays vers les campagnes, ils voulaient créer la même philosophie que la Chine avec Mao. Des milliers de personnes moururent.

The Khmer Rouge wanted to transform Cambodia into a rural, classless society in which there were no rich people, no poor people, and no exploitation. To accomplish this, they abolished money, free markets, all schooling, private property, foreign clothing styles, religious practices, and traditional Khmer culture. Public school, pagodas, mosques, churches, universities, shops, and government buildings were shut down or turned into prisons, stables, and reeducation camps. During this time, everyone was deprived from their basic rights, they couldn’t leave their cooperative or even have an unsupervised discussion. The Khmer Rouge claimed that only “pure” people can build up a revolution. They killed thousands of soldiers, and military officers whom they did not find “pure” because they followed Marshal Lon Nol, someone the Khmer Rouge opposed. They also executed hundreds of thousands of intellectuals, doctors, city residents; and minority people like Vietnamese, Chinese, and many of their own party members who were accused of being traitors. Most of these people were held in prisons, where they were detained, interrogated, tortured, and executed.

Les Khmers Rouges voulaient transformer le pays en société rurale sans classe sociale sans riches ni pauvres. Ils ont aboli l’argent, le commerce, les écoles, plus le droit d’être propriétaire de biens (maison, voiture), interdiction de porter des vêtements occidentaux, plus de religion, de magasins. Le nouveau gouvernement récupéra tous les bâtiments pour en faire des prisons des camps de réeducation ou des étables.Durant cette période, les gens n’avaient plus le droit de rien, pas parler en public avec d’autres personnes, ils ne pouvaient plus rien posséder. Les Khmers Rouges voulaient que leur Revolution soit faite uniquement par des personnes pures et par example tous les officiers et les policiers furent exécutés car ils suivaient les ordres du General Marshal Lon Nol un opposant à leur cause. Ils exécutèrent tous les intellectuels (docteurs, professeurs etc) mais aussi les minorités (Vietnamiens, Chinois) et même certains de leur propre parti qu’ils considéraient comme des traitres s’ils n’étaient pas d’accord avec les ordres. La plupart de ses prisonniers étaient torturés avant d’être exécutés.

The most important prison S-21 held about 14,000 prisoners while in operation. Only about 12 survived. On top of all this, the Cambodians were expected to produce three tons of rice per hectare (10,000mi squared) throughout the country. This meant that people had to grow and harvest rice all 12 months of the year. In most regions, the Kmer Rouge forced the people to work 18 hours a day with only I small tin of rice every 2 days and no breaks. In 1999, when the Khmer Rouge was defeated and Pol Pot was dead, 2 million Cambodians had died of disease due to the malnutrition, lack of medicine and medical services. But now, Cambodia has a new government and its economy is growing rapidly due to tourism and the exportation of textiles, though they still are a poorer nation. Even with everything that they’ve been through, the Cambodian people have remained optimistic about their future and are still wonderful people.

La prison la plus connue S-21 accueilla pas loin de 14 000 prisonniers, 12 survivant seulement. Les gens dans les campagnes devaient produire 3000kg de riz par hectare, ils étaient obligés de travailler tous les jours de l’année pendant 18 heures et ils avaient droit à seulement un bol de riztous les 2 jours. Beaucoup de gens succombaient de malnutrition ou de maladies. En 1999 Pol Pot fût jugé, il tua plus de 2 million de Cambodgiens. Maintenant, même si la corruption existe encore dans certains domaines, l’économie du pays est en pleine croissance surtout grâce au tourisme et à l’exportation de textiles. C’est encore un pays en voie de développement, ils sont entrain de repeupler leur pays très vite, il y a des enfants de partout. Par rapport à leur histoire, je les ai trouvé chaleureux, on dirait qu’ils ont tiré un trait sur le passé et que maintenant seulement le futur est important.

The staff of the 2 hotels we stayed in were just amazing, especially the Green Leaf, Tak and Lin were always making sure Jayden and I had everything we needed. On Christmas day, we did not exchanged gifts but instead we visited the children’s hospital, what an eye opening it was, when Pol Pot left there were 40 doctors remaining in this country. So you can imagine if you got sick or injured yourself the outcome would not be great, but now they are forming new doctors and slowly thy are filling those gaps. The children hospital is the only one around this region and people sometimes travel from very far to come here. They may have to sell a cow or their house to pay for the transport. But here at the hospital they provide good care and its free, they also provide food and a hamac for the family because they know they don’t have money to pay for a hotel. They form nurses and doctors and dentists there as well as providing care. The waiting room was full when we were their. They need a new roof for a section of the buildings and they were raising money for it, we felt strongly about it and donated. They really want to be able to open another smaller unit in the country side so the people will not have to travel as far and maybe some lives can be saved. It was a very humbling experience, because for us we know where to go if we need care. It is not always the case for everybody.

Le personnel des 2 hôtels où nous avons séjournés ont été vraiment formidables, encore plus le Green Leaf. Tak and Lin étaient aux petits soins pour mon frère et moi. Le jour de Noël nous n’avons pas eu de cadeaux mais à la place nous avons visité l’hôpital pour enfants de Siem Reap et fait une donation. J’ai vraiment appris beaucoup de choses, quand Pol Pot est arrivé au pouvoir il y avait  4000 docteurs dans le pays quand il en est parti il ne restait que 40 docteurs. Il n’est pas difficile d’imaginer que si tu étais malade tu n’avais pas beaucoup de chance d’échapper à la mort. Mais grâce à un Japonais un hôpital pour enfants a pu ouvrir et maintenant les gens viennent de tout le pays pour s’y faire soigner. Parfois les gens des campagnes doivent vendre leur maison ou une vache pour payer pour le transport pour arriver jusqu’à l’hôpital. Ils essayent d’ouvrir une autre branche dans le pays, cela permettrait de sauver plus d’enfants qui parfois auraient besoin d’être soigner immédiatement. Ils forment des docteurs ici, ainsi que des chirurgiens et des dentistes. Ils permettent aux gens de dormir dehors sous des abris et de faire leur propre cuisine quand ils ont quelqu’un hospitalisé. Les soins sont gratuits. Le jour de notre visite la salle d’attente était pleine et c’est tous les jours comme ça. Je ne me rendais pas compte que certaines personnes n’avaient pas accès aux soins, car pour nous ça n’a jamais été un problème. Nous n’avions pas le droit de prendre des photos par respect pour les personnes donc je ne pourrais pas l’illustrer mais ça reste un moment fort pour moi.

Warning, this is a very long blog! Leaving to go to Cambodia was a rough trip. First they made us get up at 7:00 only to make us wait until 10:00 for the bus to arrive. Then, at the border, the visa place was a hut with no electricity, so the process went by very slowly. Finally an hour and a half later we were moving again and I was quite fed up by the time we arrived in Siam Reap about 7 hours later. On the way to the hotel, I noticed that the tuk-tuks looked different than in Laos or Thailand. Instead of being mini open aired busses, there was a motorbike and a two-wheeled thingy attached to it. Our hotel, when we got there was so Nice. And so were the people. That place was easily the best place we’ve stayed in this whole trip! It had a pool and nice rooms, it was the best. I slept in a decent bed that night for the first time since I got to Laos. The next day we explored the town. My parents had gone there 19 years ago, and from what they told me, it was nothing like what it is now. There was this giant street only with pubs and restaurants, and another next to it with clothing shops and trinkets. That first day we went to go see the new Star Wars on its first day in theatres. I won’t go into depth about it because Jayden will. Oh, and the food on the menu in Siam Reap looked much more diverse than the noodles and fried rice of Laos. But enough about the town, let me talk about the famous temples we came there to see.

Préparez  vous ce blog est assez long! Le passage de frontière du Laos au Cambodge fût assez pénible surtout très long. Nous nous sommes levés à 7.00 du matin et nous sommes arrivés à destination vers 19.00. A la frontière le poste des visas était une petite cabane sans électricité donc tout est fait à la main, donc ça prend du temps. Cette une journée fatigante pas parce que j’avais fait des choses mais plutôt parce que j’étais assise à attendre ou assise dans les bus. J’ai tout de suite remarqué que les tuk tuks du Cambodge étaient légèrement différents de ceux de la Thaïlande ou du Laos. En fait ici c’est une remorque attachée à une moto. J’étais contente d’arriver à l’hotel mais encore plus quand j’ai vu comme il était beau, et le personnel était très accueillant aussi. Cet endroit reste pour moi le meilleur hôtel ou endroit ou nous sommes restés jusqu’à présent. De taille petite avec seulement 10 chambres mais avec une belle piscine et une belle déco c’était aussi beau que les hôtels des magazines. Et j’allais pouvoir dormir sur un bon lit, ce qui n’était pas toujours le cas au Laos. Comme nous allions rester plusieurs jours, le premier jour nous avons exploré la ville, mes parents m’avaient raconté comment c’était il y a 19 ans quand ils étaient venus. Heureusement la ville ne ressemble plus à ça du tout, maintenant il y a une grande rue appelée Pub Street avec beaucoup de restaurant (les menus sont plus variés que le riz fris ou les nouilles sautées du Laos) et un marché de nuit.  Nous en avons profité pour voir le nouveau Star Wars sans les queues qu’il y aurait eu aux US. Je ne rentre pas dans les détails car je pense que mon frère s’en chargera.

Some people might know about the Angkor temples while others may completely be ignorant of their existence, but let me clear things up for those who don’t know. Angkor was the capital of the Kmer Empire between the 9th and 15th century. The temples number over 1,000, and they range from piles of fallen blocks, to the magnificent Angkor Wat, the most famous one of all. That the one we visited the first. The tuk-tuk drove beside a moat with lilies and lily pads. Monkeys were scampering about, eating whatever fruits or trash they could see. At the gates of Angkor Wat, my heart sank. There were so many people spilling out from every direction. The streets were lined with tour bus after tour bus. This was not what I had expected. A little less enthusiastic, I walked amongst many toward the temple. And that’s when I saw it.

Tout le monde ne sait pas ce que sont les temples d’Angkor et où ils se trouvent, je vais vous aider. Angkor était la capitale du Royaume Khmer entre le 9ème et 15ème siècle. En tout on en compte un peu plus de 1000, il y a de tout ça va d’une petite pile de pierre au somptueux temple d’Angkor Wat. Le plus connu et celui que nous avons visité en premier. Notre tuk tuk conduisait le long d’une douve qui entoure le temple (pour vous donner une idée de la grandeur du temple le mur externe est un carré de 3.6km) et il y avait des singes qui se baladaient  le long. Quand SB (notre tuk tuk chauffeur) nous déposa toute mon excitation tomba, il y avait tellement de gens!!! En fait, ce weekend il y avait des conférences pour tous les moines de tout le pays, et les femmes moines aussi! Ce rassemblement a lieu une fois par an. Au début je pensais qu’on était mal tombé car le traffic était vraiment atroce puis quand j’ai vu le temple, tous les moines qui le visitaient en fait c’était un bonus incroyable, car tout d’un coup les temples prenaient une dimension plus authentique.

It was one the most beautiful things I have seen on all this trip. The towers, the carvings, oh! I didn’t want to leave. We caught the sunset and then left right before closing time. We returned back there the next day, at 4:30 am. Even that early, there were multitudes of people. We waited, and waited until the sky was bright enough to see clearly then we left for other temples hoping to beat the majority of the crowds.

C’était l’un des plus joli temple que j’ai visité depuis le début de notre voyage.  Il est majestueux, avec ses tours, ses bas-reliefs, nous l’avons vu au couché du soleil, la lumière le drape d’une couleur très douce. C’était un peu féerique  avec tous les moines dans leurs robes safran. Le lendemain matin nous y sommes retournés pour voir le lever du soleil cette fois ci, debout à 4h30. Même en se levant si tôt il devait y avoir facilement 300 personnes autour de la mare où se reflétait la silhouette du temple. 

The first temple we went to was Ta Prohm it was a cool one (Lara Croft Tomb Raider movie!). When these temples were rediscovered, they had been abandoned for over 400 years by the Kmers, so they were overtaken by jungle. Over the years most were restored, but a couple were left as they were found. The first thing I saw when I entered this temple were the huge trees growing on the walls. There were also ropes and wooden walkways because some of those structures were unstable, therefore unsafe to walk near. I was really amazed with those trees though. Their roots spread across the ancient, warped walls like hot candle wax. The branches reached higher than any tree in Massachusetts. I really felt like I was discovering these ruins for the first time.

Pour battre les foules, après le Angkor Vat nous sommes allés à Ta Prohm, le temple qui a été laissé tel quel avec les arbres qui ont poussé directement sur les temples. Il n’y avait presque personne, et avec le bruit des animaux j’avais presque l’impression d’être une exploratrice et de découvrir le temple. Il fallait faire attention car certaines structures sont devenues instables avec les racines qui poussent les pierres.

And the gates! All made out of stone, they all had the same Buddha heads on each of the four sides. Something I forgot to mention, the temples of Angkor had amazing carving of over 1000 years, much better than the primitive ones of the Greeks. The next temples we visited were still nice, they were minor ones so there weren’t as many people as let’s say Angkor Wat.

Angkor Thom est la ville royale datant de la fin du 12ème siècle c’est un carré d’environ 3km de long, il y a 4 portes d’entrée pour la cité mais quelles portes! ce sont de grandes tours avec un visage de buddha de chaque côté. A chaque coin, il y avait quelque chose de plus magnifique. J’ai oublié de vous dire que les temples sont la plupart couvert de bas-reliefs ou de sculptures, ce qui les rend bien plus vivants.

There was another cool temple called a water temple. To get to it we had to walk on this board walk across a shallow bed of water where trees and lilies grew. The temple itself was not that mind blowing but the landscape was so that one was definitely worth visiting.

J’ai bien aimé aussi le temple Neak Prean, pour y accéder il fallait marcher sur un ponton au dessus de marais, il y avait de miniscules nénuphars dans ce marais. Le temple par lui même n’était pas le plus phénoménal mais sa situation géographique était spéciale.  

The last temple we went to for the day was Angkor Wat. The carvings there were so much better than any of the other temples. Whole walls were covered in detailed murals of Hinduist gods and battles between armies: Ramayana story. It doesn’t look it at first, but even the three towers are ornately carved with statues of hideous beasts and Asparas, which are dancing cloud spirits.

Notre dernier temple de la journée était encore Angkor Vat, cette fois ci nous avons fait le tour des bas-reliefs qui racontent l’histoire du Ramanaya. Même les tours sont sculptées, j’ai pu aller en haut avec ma mère Jayden n’a pas pu car il était trop jeune! La vue était très belle  sur la jungle. Il y a beaucoup de statues d’Asparas sorte  danseuses avec leurs bijoux, elles sont des esprits.

After that visit we returned to the hotel and swam. For the next two days we just chilled because we had time on our hand so that’s what we did. One night we went to this buffet and had a really nice dinner with a traditional Cambodian dancing show afterwards. It is a very slow and graceful type of dancing, and beautiful costumes. The next night we saw a circus. I know, that sounds quite silly, but it wasn’t the kind with jugglers or lions, this particular one was with acrobats. The people in the acts were collected from poor villages in the Cambodian countryside and brought to Siam Reap to learn the art of theatre. And they were incredible. Their flexibility was out of this world, they could do splits while doing a handstand, and their strength! They could go three one the shoulders of one, each one doing something crazy like doing a backflip into a one-handed handstand on top of the head of someone else! In all of my 4 years of gymnastics, never had I accomplished such a thing ?. After being inspired by that performance, my dad, Jayden and I tried doing similar things in the hotel’s swimming pool. We managed to all go on my dad’s shoulders but couldn’t keep it for very long.

Après cette longue matinée, on a tous fait un plongeon dans la piscine de l’hôtel, et ça nous a fait du bien. Comme on avait du temps, on a passé le 2 jours suivant à faire des devoirs et à explorer la ville. En fait il y a pleins de choses à faire, on est allé à un buffet et on a assisté à des danses classiques Cambodgiennes, les filles avaient des costumes merveilleux et elles étaient très belles (ma mère était malade donc pas super pour elle!). La soirée suivante on est allé au cirque, un spectacle recommandé par les guides et une amie de maman qui est allé au Cambodge récemment. Le spectacle était hallucinant car c’est un mélange de plusieurs genre, acrobatie, jonglage, équilibriste mais aussi musique, et théâtre. Et ce sont des jeunes de milieu défavorisé comme les campagnes, ils leur offre une éducation et un métier, ils sont tellement bons qu’ils seront à Paris pendant 3 mois, ils sont aussi inviter dans d’autres pays. Je trouve cette initiative super.On a été tellement inspiré que le lendemain dans la piscine on s’est livré à des acrobaties entre mon père et mon frère mais on n’est pas au même niveau qu’eux.

After a few days of rest and homework, we resumed our temple-visiting. We went to Banteay Srey it was very far away, 1hr by tuk-tuk, but it was well worth it. This temple was supposed to have the best carvings in all of the Angkor complex. They weren’t wrong. The carvings there were even more beautiful than in Angkor Wat. The level of detail was unreal, I could easily depict the flower belt on some of the statues or a god riding on an elephant. So beautiful. Unfortunately its beauty brought many people too. I was secretly hoping that the distance between this wat and the others would drive people away, it didn’t really although the number of people there was decidedly smaller than the other temples. We stopped at Bayon temple in Angkor Thom. Built in the late 12-13th century as the official state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist king Javarman VII, the Bayon stands at the center of Javarman’s capital, Angkor Thom. This temple was different than all of the other temples because of the 250 Buddha faces all around the temple. Each of the faces was about 4ft by 4ft and they all wore the very same smiling, serene expression. We spent our last day of visit to go see the sunset at the water temple. I think that that was one of the best sunsets on this trip. The sun was reflected in the placid water so it would have been hard to tell on which side the sky was if the picture had been flipped over. As the sun dipped beneath the horizon, all of the bugs and frogs awoke and started chirping. This must have been a very tranquil place back when the Khmers lived there. Then we went back to the hotel and further explored the town of Siam Reap and our time in Cambodia drew to an end.

On a repris notre visite des temples, cette fois ci on est allé à Banteay Srei, il était loin! Mais ses bas reliefs et sculptures étaient de toute beauté et ca valait la peine, même si à mon goût il y avait trop de touristes!! Après on s’est dirigé vers Angkor Thom avec le temple de Bayon datant du 12 ème 13ème siècle, c’était le temple officiel du roi bouddhiste Javarman VII. Il est très diffèrent des autres car il a 250 visages de Buddha sur ses tours, elles sont grandes et impressionnantes, elles ont toutes le même sourire paisible. Le dernier jour, on est revenu pour voir le coucher du soleil sur le temple d’eau et on n’a pas été déçu! C’était un magnifique coucher de soleil. J’essaye d’imaginer cet endroit quand c’était une ville vivante et des temples actifs, ça devait être un endroit magnifique et paisible pour les Khmers. Notre voyage au Cambodge tire à sa fin, mais j’en ai d’excellents souvenirs, je ne suis pas prête d’oublier ce pays.
